There's something that's been annoying me for a while, so I thought I'd post a thread about it (because I have nothing better to do).

I wish people would stop posting gigantic pictures in threads. It makes it so that you have to scroll vertically and horizontally to see it, and then you still can't see the whole thing all at once (unless you have a huge display, that is). Also, for some reason when you post a large picture on this forum it stretches all of the posts horizontally so you have to scroll to read those too. It's kind of a pain.

It isn't very difficult to resize an image. There are numerous free programs for every operating system that will do this, plus many image uploading sites have an option to do this while you upload. 800x600 is a good size for most screens - easy to see without scrolling and yet still plenty detailed. If you need to post a hi-res image you should post a link to it - that way it can be resized within the browser or an image viewer if necessary, and it doesn't cause the problems I mentioned above.

This could all probably be fixed with some modifications to the forums, but I think the mods probably have better things to do. If everyone would do what I suggested it would be a non-issue.

    That's my two cents.

But how will anyone marvel over my gorgeous photo making skills?

In all seriousness though I agree. It is however pretty easy for most retarded people (er... Normal people) to just upload stuff to photobucket and never think twice about the size.

Me, I learned long ago never EVER use full sized originals. As an individual who has sold photography in the past, you will get an 800x600 from me at best, and you can be grateful if I have watermarked it to boot!

Most image hosting sites generate the code needed to post a clickable thumbnail,
but it takes a bit of hunting around to find it.

There was also a discussion on here about oversized avatars messing with the alignment,
but nobody seemed to take much notice of that either :p

I sorta discontinued the use of 1024x768 back in 2006 when I upgraded to 1920x1200 myself. Problem solved.

Though I'd really prefer 2500x1600 but then I'd have to drop $1k every time I needed to upgrade video cards...

This is far more annoying than pictures of a high enough resolution to cause scrolling. FAR more annoying. Besides, the forums only use 1/3 of my screen at any one time usually. On this laptop it's more like 1/2 but I'm not going to bother complaining because the forums aren't setup for variable width display.

If you use firefox there is always the "Right click>View Image" feature that will show the image by itself and you can zoom it out to fit your screen or view the OG resolution.

Personally I prefer OG most of the time now. But back when I had a smaller monitor i'd just use the above.

There. Better? Anyway, how is that more annoying? It just shifts the text slightly to the right.

Which can make reading the text harder if you are using a netbook or some other mobile device.

    Huh.

I don't know how that's worse than a picture twice as wide as my screen resolution, which is difficult to scroll on with my PC, at least when used to moving in a single dimension.

You can download an image plugin for just about any browser now that does it for you if someone doesnt resize things to your liking.

    ????

This doesn't happen to me, I've never had an avatar mess up alignment.

Seeing as 56k is pretty much dead and mobile browsing is pretty quick these days, large pictures aren't the end of the world.

So you have to scroll a bit more, big deal. It's exercise :p

Anyway shouldn't the forum have a built in image adjuster? Most do, if people want to show off huge pictures that go beyond the size of the limiter just link to them.

The first time I ever posted here, my first response was an all caps

    "RESIZE YOUR AVATAR".

    or some shit like that.

That being said, thumbnails would work if the images are really huge, but also, plugins are available.

To each his own, I guess.

You know, most sites have fairly tight restrictions on Avatars.
Surprising it's not like that, which I guess results in the current topic?

I get what la-li-lu-le-lo is saying, it would be nice to open a thread, and have all the images resized to fit the page perfectly so I don't have to do horizontal scrolling. I guess it not a problem with people with large screens, but I'm using a 13" widescreen laptop.

Also I haven't been able to find a plugin to resize pictures for Chrome, if anyone knows where one is, that would be amazingly helpful!

I wonder if we could add something like this to the boards since this is vbulletin based . . . Image resizer

    Thanks

Don't most threads contain a preface stating that the contents contains large images so beware? I thought that was good enough, but I'm sure there are cases when there is no warning.

I'd like to mention that many websites use scripting to reduce images visually. Like, if the image is beyond a particular size, reduce it to an expandable image box and grow only if the user clicks on it.

If you are using firefox, like I am. Then you can use the plugin known as image zoom, to make the pictures smaller. So it is no biggy really.

I'm using Chrome, and while chrome will do that automatically if its the only image on the page, it doesn't do that for image on a website.

I need to find a Chrome extension that can do that . . .
