I bet there will still be people/companies repairing and refurbing LDs for years to come. There are still die hard DAT users and folks out there servicing those units.
Some people argue LD has better sound than DVD, depending on the disc. Apparently DVDs have more compression on certain tracks due to the number of audio tracks required to be put on the disc. LD is mostly CD quality.
Over the last 24 hours I sold a Pioneer S9, plus a Sony MUSE Decoder and a MUSE LD (Universal Soldier). The total was about $1,200. So the market isn't quite dead yet...heh. What's cool is that Pioneer Japan still services them. For about $90 (includes shipping both ways) you can send your player to them and they'll clean it and do a belt replacement. Pioneer also gives a new 3-month warranty on a player that they've serviced which is cool since the hardware can up up to 10 years old. For the X9 the tech was supposed to come to my shop for the inspection and I was going to get some pictures of it, but in the end he was running late and asked if he could take it with him for the weekend. So, no pics. Bummer.
japan's customer service is so sweet. you could get FDS games until recently, provided you send a disk to nintendo!
