i remember reading through a few magazines back before the release of unreal tournament on dc that it was proposed to have that game be fully compatible online with its pc port. but it never came to light. how hard is it from a technical standpoint for it to be done today with todays technology?
PC port? What?!?! It came out on the PC in 1999. The Dreamcast version was 2001. Which would you say is that port?? Can you cite sources for these claims? I don't remember them saying that. What do you mean by today's technology? Today's technology would be ignore the Dreamcast and get a 360 or PlayStation 3, and they can do cross-platform gaming, yes.
Perhaps I should have been more clear. I don't have any sources to cite other than utter memory of reading somewhere about a fps on dreamcast having possible connectivity to its pc port. It was an American magazine and i'm sure it was either quake or unreal torunament, perhaps another member can verify this. By asking if it was possible by today technology i didnt mean soley with the long dead dreamcast, I meant with this generations consoles.
If my memory serves me right, yes, the were trying to implement cross platform play between the PC and Dreamcast versions of UT, however it was dropped from the final product. I may be wrong, though. Also, along with Shadowrun, wasnt Lost Planet cross platform as well??
Final Fantasy XI was cross platform. I was playing on my PS2 and my cousin on my PC right next to the TV and we joined the same server and grouped a few times...it was fun although there was about a 1 second delay between us haha.
Ahhh yes, i forgot about FF11. I definately remember playing with PC players, and i was playing on PS2. Does anyone know if the 360 version is also cross platform ( Id imagine it would be, but who knows:shrug
An addon pack was released for Quake 3 on the PC to allow them to play with Dreamcast players. It wasn't available on launch (I dont think), but it was made available shortly after. And yes, the 360 plays on the same servers as all other FFXI players.
Careful with how you use the term cross-platform. Technically, it only means that the game was developed for several consoles. Cross-platform games were available long before consoles networked with each other - starting with Miner 2049er, of course. Likewise, games can be cross-platform and have online features, yet you can't connect to the same game on different platforms. PLEASE..... stop referring to the PC port! Did you not hear what I said earlier? The game came out on the PC two years BEFORE the Dreamcast! That makes the PC version the ORIGINAL - the Dreamcast version is the port!
The download was only a map pack, released by Sega. Yes, it was official. However, the PC version got updated, and that stopped it working with DC. Activision's official answer Instructions
retro my friend, life is too short to be such an uptight whiner about semantics, don't you think? Admittedly "forever gaming" uses "port" when he means version, but the world does not revolve around correcting other peoples definitions, especially when they don't realy pertain to the topic at hand. Thank you.
Quake 3 Arena DC and the correct version of the PC game allowed for cross-platform gaming. I had/have the DC map pack for the PC, although to select them maps you had to use the prompt - clearly not intended for n00bs =)
To clarify, yes, Quake 3 is the game "forever gaming" is most likely referring to. Activision's response is partly true. If you want to reinstall the 1.16 release of the game, PC players can still play against DC players if you runt he dedicated server. Unreal Tournament never had the capability to connect with PC players. I've heard that Unreal Tournament's server-side software had been rewritten for the Dreamcast port. Additionally, Unreal Tournament's maps were of a lower poly count than the PC version and also can't be used with the PC version since they contain references to the PVR image format. Getting it back online isn't a matter of fancy technology as much as good old fashioned detective work in regards to understanding the data being transferred.
I think that Unreal Tournament on PS3 is the same as the PC version (they can use the same mods, expansion packs etc, but not sure if people can play against each other).
I seem to remember that 4x4 Evolution on the Dreamcast and PC were supposed to be able to work together on the internet, and I believe that did come to fruition.
