I know alot of users on here have their wii's softmodded. The latest update in the US (I just did it like 2 nights ago) stated it'll remove softmods if you update it. Is there a softmod to work around this update yet?
If you mean 4.2, it will remove the Homebrew Channel, DVDx & Bootmii from your Wii. If you absolutely must update to 4.2, just update to the latest hackmii installer (0.6) before you update and you'll be fine. I recommend not updating though, check hackmii.com for more details (they wipe your boot2.. not safe).
Funny you should mention this. I have a USB loader for use with an external USB HDD drive. I use it when I travel with my Wii. I was initially concerned with the advent of 4.2U but then I just waited patiently for things to clear out a bit on the internet. Behold, I used Waninkoko's Fimware Updater 4.2 and after an hour long of waiting, and 3 failed tries, it finally came together. The updater grabs only the necessary IOS and installation files/channels from the internet and processes them. Things to keep in mind.. I have never gone above and beyond fucking about with IOS in order to get mysterious applications working. I say this because many people with mutilated IOS files seem to have ended up with bricked wiis etc. Another thing to keep in mind. First install Hackmii before you use the updater. This is essential in order to update the Homebrew channel to its latest version, as emu_kidid mentions, else it will not work in 4.2. I am very happy (And perhaps lucky so far) that everything went well, since I m not really a master of the finer Wii hacking details, I used guides and read forums. Bottom line: if you're careful and follow instructions and proof-read the instructions against other peoples' experience (Even noobs) you should be fine. PS: Make sure you have somewhere about 900+ blocks free in your NAND. Obviously, before someone worries too much, the above are unrelated to piracy, I just rip and play games I own from the USB HDD hooked to my wii, like a small jukebox =) I use USB Loader GX
Just a personal preference perhaps, but I wouldn't touch Waninkoko's software with 10 foot stick. He's such a hackish programmer, I wouldn't trust anything he codes to try and get something running. I guess it's the same way I wouldn't mess around with patching/modding IOS's into some frakenIOS. (^_^); But thats just me.
Then isn't it 'bad' that Waninkoko's Updater is apparently more stable then the one Nintendo used for the last update?
I bricked my wii installing the anti bricking software and I am pissed. Now I gotta track down a wii itself for cheap. Bottom line be carefull when doing these hacks. As for me next wii not hacking.
Waninkoko typically does not develop his own functionality. Rather, the good folks over at hackmii develop the functions and do all the research hacking themselves. Then they port the source back into the libraries for the homebrew community to use. Granted, Waninkoko is quite good at figuring out all the API's and such, but he doesn't have the smarts to come up with any of these things himself. If it wern't for all the work Bushing and Marcan contributed to the diffrent aspects of Wii research, lots of things Waninkoko develops would still be non-existant.
Then there are people like me, who don't care who really made it, as long as it works. So far, Waninkoko's stuff has worked perfectly for me and I didn't sweat a brow while it was doing everything automatically, like a scripted batch file. I don't know, maybe I'm too old, but I love automation for things that I don't have the time to master myself. All in all, he has contributed in his own way in allowing more people with less knowledge to make good use of other people's findings.
I couldn't blame you for laughing, its highly ironic. As for taking it back, nintendo won't touch it due to the homebrew channel and wads being on there. Honestly the only reason I ever hacked my wii was so I could play my japanese copy of sonic gems on it. Oh well, lesson learned.
...would they even KNOW? They might not even fix it, just swap it for another one after they receive them."Bricked? under warrenty? send him this one"
How could nintendo find out about it? Correct me if I'm wrong, the NAND is encrypted and there is no real way for Nintendo to extract the keys needed to decrypt the NAND and find out if you were running the homebrew channel or not. The only thing they can really do is check for external mods.
