    Yes.

Or I just found myself playing the same old games that I love and not playing anything that I had been buying.

Every couple of months I consider selling everything and just keeping one or two consoles. But I always end up talking myself out of it. Just knowing that I won't get half the money I spent on all my crap back just bothers me.

Internet addiction also keeps me from playing games. Talking/reading about them rather than just playing them.

Sometimes you realise there are more important things than games and collecting. It lostme my girlfriend of roughly 2 years (not like crappy teen gf/bf) I sold any duplicates i had of anything and boxed everything up. Ill still pick up busted shit that needs fixing or games i dont have but now i play in moderation and will before i buy a game make sure i finish the others. So just about every game i own ive beaten

Actually i learned to collect in a more smart way because of prices.

If i could get games and consoles cheap, like most of you guys can, i would have tons of items collecting dust as well.

I admire the will to trim down a massive collection to the essence. You have more room, get some bucks back for free (in case the money issue wasn't the main reason for the sellout) and I guess most people will feel like a burden was lifted from their shoulder as well.

I appreciate that a lot, but personally I'm not quite ready for that. There are still so many games to get that I'd like to try out. I don't think I've seen, owned and played enough after 6 years of collecting and 14 years of gaming. I am a hoarder anyway, I have lots of smaller sub-collections like foreign money, DVD's, comics, pulp novels or literature about history (concentrates on Germany 1933-1945). I like to hoard, to have loads of stuff lying around and digging through it untill I find something I like. I bet all of you can emphasize this enthusiasm.

It took me quite some time to realize what's really fun to collect. I started collecting just about everything from PAL to JPN in spring '04, discovered Saturn, Dreamcast, Super Nintendo. Around 07 or 08 I must have switched to Japanese-only collecting because I prefer the packaging to the Western ones and I have some crappy Japanese skills, so what the fuck. I was still collecting every garbage I could find - in mint condition as always, but a mint GAME WARE Vol. 3 is still remaining mint bullshit.
Actually, I changed my way of collecting just about one year ago, when I decided that a way too high percentage of my money is wasted on stuff that's maybe rare or good-looking, but unplayable. I kind of learned, that "good games" that you've been waiting for are at least as nice to find in the mail as a nice limited edition package of a game you don't care shit about. I still appreciate unplayable but lovely limited editions, but for now I only wanna hunt good games. Dunno how to put this in words adequately...
    100€ = budget
Would you buy a Dracula X PC-Engine for it or a Famicom Disk piano teaching game?
Both are very damn sexy, but I sorta realized that a minty DracX is more important to me right now than a dust catcher. No offense though, if I had the money and space to afford both, I'd be there in a second. I damn love that pointless hoarding of JPN retro stuff.

Maybe I'll sell it all off when I'm 30 yrs old, who knows. I couldn't imagine that today because I'm obsessed with too many items, playable or not, but you can never tell. Then again, it's not necessary. I know some people who enjoy this passion for gaming with at least as much enthusiasm as I do, only difference is they are 10-20yrs older than me (I'm 20). There's a chance to go on forever at last!^^b

The early dawn the shades of time.
Twilight crawling through my window pane.
Am I awake or do I dream,
The strangest pictures I have seen,
Night is day and twilight's gone away.
With your head held high and your scarlet lies,
You came down to me from the open skies,
    It's either real or it's a dream
There's nothing that is in between

I could never hoard loose/multiple items, I always see the money I could make by selling my doubles so I could buy more.

I'm excited about what you decide to keep. I guess your throne of Playstations (lol) is rather being recommended to leave than the giant Mortal Kombat poster w/gold cartridges of each game. Will you keep all the dev items including doubles of rare stuff like gang writers or your TOOL tower (^^)? It's way rarer than most things after all, but I assume you'll have obtained a little army of doubles by now.

So, why would you collect 35 Sega Genesis systems? Were you expecting a video game famine or something? (o_O)?!

Sounds like me with £3 PlayStation consoles. I recently sold all of my games that I owned as a kid - apart from the kickass ones (at least IMO). On a much smaller scale - but similar to what you're doing now. Good luck regardless of what you decide to do.

My real problem is getting rid of things sometimes. I, too, have a box of (but not 35) Genesis...es. Geneses.

And I can't seem to let them go! They're all like little lost children. But then they're not even being used in the least bit! No love! In a box!
I've only got three Dreamcasts, but that's even worse because each one has a little story behind it. I have a lot of local friends that want one, and I could even visit the units on a semi-regular basis but still don't want to part.

    Cheap things kill me sometimes.

Kev, just make sure you take plenty of pictures and even annotated video of your stuff you sell that might be epic or semi-dear to you. You'll be able to look at it in 5 years and get a big 'ol grin on your face!
There are so many things I wish I had on video... :/ and this also explains why I've got 250GB of me opening boxes and playing games for the first time.

I did myself get to the point of collecting too much. Now I just buy what I really want to play and at decent price. There was a time id buy games often just to buy them and soon made me feel real sick.

I sometimes pick up a 64 game here or there as they bring back good memories and the emulation itself is just mixed bag. For me it was tough giving up my genesis/sega cd and snes collection, but needed money at the time since I was just laid off so had to give some stuff up.

Honestly though I could never buy multiple copies of the same game or system I just find it redundant. I'm still debating whether I should give up my modded psp and ps2. Only time will tell.

if you realy plan to move your location or if you simply need the money coz things have changed in your life then your plan to split with parts of your collection is understandable ...

just because of not understanding to have xx units of a specific thing right at the moment is no reason to sell stuff ... coz your mind will (might) change after some time

i have done the false thing with selling of a collection once and nowadays i am damned in hell coz my mind has changed and it is not possible to aquire such a collection again

Myself I don't have multiples of anything, just a lot of stuff that I haven't touched yet (for instance, virtually my entire Xbox collection) or things that I can't even use (Cassette vision, Gakken TV boy, various famicones, all which won't work with my TV.)

So yeah, I'm gonna be trimming some of this off the top as well.

In the past I have sold and re-bought and at some point was close to saying goodbye to my whole collection. Now I have at least 50 games that I have never completed and at least 50 more that I want to complete at least one more time. After that I'll probably only keep a part of them.

That said, I'm a "multiplatformer" at heart and will buy systems if there are a handful of titles that I really want to play, which is a problem when you're moving every couple of years.

It's a real dilemma: on one hand it's stuff that I enjoy and appreciate, on the other hand it's just a burden. A reduced/limited collection is the only good solution in my case.

I'm more or less afraid to actually play the games I own, so I buy original games and play backups. Especially when it comes to CD's, normal wear and tear stops them from functioning after a couple of years...

The result is a large collection that I never even touch. A waste really...

Normal wear and tear? You aren't supposed to chew on them, you know.

Seriously though, even the worst CDRs should last longer than that.

Maybe, but some of my favourite games have gotten too many scratches to be able to properly read all of the files, and I won't take any chances. I like my games to be as mint as possible.

I think if it all can't be crammed into a closet or two, it owns you. My collection strategy is really simple:

-I only buy stuff used or new at bargain prices (I'll sometimes trade up condition)
-I only allow two copies of a console (only one for common/accessories apart from controllers)
-I use backwards compatibility/skip entire consoles if possible
-I stay away from arcade stuff, computers and consoles with 5 games
-I only allow minty/complete copies of my favorite nostalgic games
-All other games must be cheap and loose/dispensable and able to fit into a few boxes for long-term storage
-I turn over all recent games so money isn't held up, no exceptions
    -No memorabilia is allowed!
