LOL, I like the stats! 82 raids 39 arrests 90,250 DVDs seized Assuming that's 1 arrest per raid, that means they didn't find anything on 43 raids, i.e. 52% of the raids were a waste of time. However, the successful raids showed an average of 2314 DVDs per person! We're not talking about Joe Scho downloading the odd film here, we're talking about the dodgy buggers selling them on market stalls and such. There's no way they can TOTALLY get rid of piracy, really. They are going for the big boys. Why the deadline for the Olympics, though?! What has this got to do with that?!?!?!?!?
indeed, 70 euros for a PS3 game is a joke. Back in the n64 days Nintendo's cartridges were more expensive than competing systems. At least they were fast, and this justified their price somewhat. CDs and optical media were the champions of companies, they promised that the lower cost of production will be felt by the consumer, who will have to pay less for the game. Fast forward to today and you're paying n64 prices for anything pressed on a disc for a next generation system, even games with relatively low budgets. It is clear and undeniable that they re making a killing at the expense of the consumer, while maintaining cost low on their side.
Whilst I agree that the costs of games is extortionate nowadays, and that the media is cheaper to produce than in the past, that's not the sole issue. Even back in the SNES days, the companies were being investigated for charging extortionate amounts. It was said the games cost around £8 to make, but they were selling for close to £50. That said, we need to consider how much it costs to make the games. Look at industry job sites and you'll see that programmers and such can earn a fair whack... and we're paying their wages. OK, it is obviously possible to make budget games still, but how many programmers would be happy to possibly take a pay cut in order to make games cheaper to the public? Or would making them cheaper result in more sales, thus keeping their salaries? I don't understand why EA games cost so much (usually if a game comes out at £40 full price, an EA game will be £45-50). Not only are they charging us more, but they are frequently putting adverts in their games, giving them even more profit!
if a game costs £8 to make, that includes the wages of the programmers etc. to me. so, where does the rest go?
No, they were talking about the physical cost of a cartridge, I think, and ignoring the rest. If you think about what is in a SNES cartridge, that seems about right. Well, you're looking at around a 25% markup in shops, e.g.: base price + 25% + tax So in the UK, if a game is £39.99 in the stores, then it cost the retailer £27 before VAT. Oh wait, it's 15% now - well, I'm giving you an example on the old VAT rate ;-) Then you go back to the distributor, before going back to the manufacturer. I would imagine that the cost of pressing a single disc, including case and artwork printing, wouldn't be anywhere near £8 now. Still, after physical costs (and recouping wages) you have to consider the costs of having the game copyrighted. I don't know if there is some kind of agency to deal with copyright and royalties in games as there is in music, but those fees would need paying, too. Plus anything that you've licensed, e.g. football teams, comic book characters. And then there's storage - warehouses cost money. Oh, and shipping costs, maybe two or three journies (pressing plant to publisher to distributor). And let's not forget marketing costs, especially advertising. When it comes down to it, the publisher only makes around 1.5% profit, as does the developer. That's not even £1 each from that £39.99 game. And remember how much we said the retailer made? Around £8. That's 20%! Click here to see a slightly old breakdown of the costs involved. You might like to read some insider rants, perhaps! ;-) EDIT: So as not to take this thread any more off-topic, I have created a topic about game costs in General Gaming. It can be found here
Good thing they're concentrating on fake DVDs... as a pedopheliac, terrorist, that means I have much more time to sharpen my knives and find ripe game on MySpace unfettered.
yeah..as for cleaning the streets from any dirt, do the same for data streams and suburb black markets. a wonder they didn't to decide to shut down the whole i-net.
