Lamont's list is definitely solid. You have quite a selection to choose from. Luckily horror games aren't too long (Silent Hill 1 takes less than 3 hours to beat, and SH3 can take less than 2 and a half hours,) so you can definitely run through a few quickly. Also, what's the main difference between new Siren and the PS2 one? I own the PS2 one, wasn't sure if the re-release is worth it.
I'm not a huge fan of horror games, so I perhaps can't judge them too well, but I do agree with those who say that a game is only truly a horror game if your in-game character is weak and underpowered (especially with regards to weapons and ammunition) compared to the enemies you encounter. I mean, some people would call Half-Life, The Suffering, and Alien vs. Predator (the PC game from 2000, which to me is still by far the best AvP game) horror games, for example, as you do fight for your life against horrors, and indeed they are also very good games, but I don't think of them as horror (even though AvP is (to me) probably the most unnerving first person shooter ever, as it can really make you jump when an Alien appears from nowhere and kills you, just (very atmospheric) first person shooters. I think a horror game should be one where you are constantly aware of your (well, your in-game character's) mortality, where you are underpowered (unlike Half-Life, The Suffering, and AvP, as in those games you get a large arsenal and all of the ammunition you could ever need), and often have to think about avoiding the enemy rather than killing them, to save ammunition. To me, System Shock 2, Condemned, Silent Hill, etc, are horror games, but not Bioshock, F.E.A.R., or The Darkness, as even though the latter three have horror storyline/settings, they all provide you with enough weapons and ammunition to fight through the enemies you encounter. Just my opinion, I know that other might disagree.
I would hope so! What with being a horror collector and what-not! As for Siren Blood Curse/Siren New Translation, it's a more Americanized retelling of the original game. If you have the original PS2 one then you don't really need it but that all said and done, having a physical copy of it (only Japan or Europe) is worth it for the making of the game piece that's only available on the physical game disc. My husband finds it absolutely ridiculous with how I play it on the television in the bedroom - I have the colour settings tweaked so it's darker and I have the game in greyscale and I'm barely able to see anything in the dark room. Haha. Some of the puzzles did get changed around a little from the PS2 version so it's a little bit fiddly but familiar enough. Well if you were wanting to try some out along those lines then I would recommend: anything Clock Tower, DEMENTO/Haunting Ground, the Amnesia series, White Day, Rule of Rose, Siren/Forbidden Siren, Kuon, Twilight Syndrome series (including Moonlight Syndrome)... I've a massive list of various types of horror games so if you feel inclined to play any but want something where the situation actually is dire for the character then I've likely got something to cover that. As for that, Half-Life would essentially count. Especially Half-Life 2 with Ravenholm! To be quite honest, I was unable to play Bioshock due to the motion blur and point of view causing extreme motion sickness and I had to listen to my husband play the game. To me, it was quite interesting with only going from the game's story and gameplay entirely by ear. If one were to get motion-sick, I would recommend listening to it as it does sound quite horrifying. That and Atlas' has a fantastic voice. F.E.A.R. freaked out a few co-workers of mine that can't sit through Asian horror films so if someone finds Ju-On or say, Siren or Project Zero scary but prefer shooters then it would work for them. The Darkness I didn't care much for outside of a couple of slight moments, I prefer most of the other titles on my list. I enjoyed Shadows of the Damned but, I take Suda's games as things similar to campy horror movies like Evil Dead. But as I'm not particularly a big shooter or first person gamer, I figured I'd include some others that had alright atmospheres or that I know startled a few people. If it were purely a list from everything I've played, most of it would be third-person and along the lines of me yelling to play DEMENTO/Haunting Ground.
@Lamont My fault, had no idea that was your expertise. Then again, the list probably should have tipped me off haha. Okay, I'll stick with the original then. Really wish Team Silent was still making us scared to go to bed/bathroom/anywhere dark.
Haha, no worries mate. I actually also enjoy making lists so take that as you will. XD But yeah, the original is good. If you were a new player, then I'd recommend trying the PS3 one to see if it caught your interest. Shame that the sequel didn't hit the states.
