MM3 isn't compatible in stealth mode with old PU7-PU-8 boards. It works only in classic mode (4 wire)

Try this, although I'm not making any promises:

    http://wiki.assemblergames.com/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=wiki:sony:pu8_mm3_test.jpg

It seems to work, but it's hard to test because the only PU-8 machine I have here has problems reading CDs anyway, so it's hard to tell if it's flaky because of the mod or just because it is.

I tested it using Dino Crisis (JP) and it booted OK without the warning screen.

I would be interested in getting feedback about if it works for you or not.

(Yeah, I know the wiring is a mess - this was just a quick hack).

Edit: The wire jumper on the board near the wire coming from pin 3 of the PIC is not part of the mod - it to repair a trace I cut as part of another experiment, so there is no need to install it.

hey Trimesh, ill be sure to give this diagram a go as soon as i go home today, thanks for the quick response to my post as well, i don't want to have to instal a switch to the chip to be able to play stealth games, a 4 wire instal is crap, and i don't want to have to patch all my iso's to be able to work with the 4 wire, so if this works, ill make my new scph-1001 my new main system out of the 9 other ps1 consoles i have now

Please let us know how it works out too, it would be of great help to everybody :). Best game to check out too see if stealth is fully working is a NTSC-U version of Spyro Year of the Dragon.

I'm pretty sure that it might be from factory. The chip is just a hex inverter, hex inverters are not used for PS1 modchips

i have never opened any console and seen a chip like this from the factory. i wonder if i remove it will the console still boot ? why would that motherboard need a hex inverter ?

Well, it looks like an official Sony modification, but I have no idea what it does. It's certainly not connected to the right places to be a mod chip, though. The 7474 is just a logic gate (Dual D-Type flipflop) - the only thing I can think is that it's some sort of synchronizer used to clean up the timing on a signal - the brown wire looks like the input and the yellow the output, and if you look on the main board between them you can see a place where a SMT resistor has been removed and the circuit inserted in it's place.

As far as modifying the system to play backups is concerned, I'm pretty sure you can just ignore it.

    Edit:

Apparently it's a "Zenith mod" - some models of Zenith TVs didn't like the PSX output in non-interlaced mode, so if you contacted customer service they would install that board to fix it - if you don't have a Zenith TV, it's unnecessary, but harmless. If you want to remove it anyway, you can, but you will have to replace the 22R SMT resistor they took off the board when they installed it.

thanks for clearing that up for me, i thought it was weird that the board had that on it and you guys said it was a factory mod, never seen anything like this before, thanks for looking that up for me, im about to attempt the diagram that you wired up as a test for me, ill send some pics of it as well as test it with dino crisis and spyro to make sure its stealth, any other known games that i should check out with the anti-modchip ?

Well, if they boot without problems, then the stealth is working - I jsut use NTSC:J Dino Crisis because it has the last version of the mod chip detection code on it, and I happen to have an original copy of it. I think that Spyro game has the same code on it.

Looks good to me - incidentally, the extra wires are

3: Speed (X1/X2) control line from CD mechacon
    4: Reset switch
    7: Door switch

This is basically a copy of the wiring on the PU-18 board

But can you make a better spot of point 5? it's good as @lilkuz2005 signed in the image or it's the point at left?

    EDIT: nevermind, 5 it's OK!

well just wired the chip in, and so far every backup i have is playing 100%. and it loads faster than my scph-5501 or scph-7501 consoles. i need to burn a copy of spyro to make sure, but dino crisis plays just fine, thanks TriMesh, the diagram is stealth

Thank you for confirming it - the wiring was educated guesswork, so it's nice to know it was correct.

    That's annoying....

Have you got one of those game enhancer carts? If so, try booting it using that so that it uses the alternate timing.

    so no 100% stealth support....
So i think only the "beast" mayumi v2 support full stealth on pu-8 and pu-7

    It's a very shame.....
