I've got a US PS2, model SCPH-50001, and I'm looking for a mod-chip that will allow me to play authentic Japanese PSX and PS2 games. That is it, no plans for playing back-up or PAL discs, etc.

I don't know much about mod chips, so I don't know if this is anything to worry about, but I don't want one that will change the way the system starts up, change any menus, add a different front-end, etc. I don't want there really to be any evidence of it being modded, other than being able to play both US and Japanese PSX and PS2 games. Something simple, reliable, and transparent.

    Any suggestions?

Well with free mcboot and esr you can play games from other regions but other than that I don't know anything about actual mod chips.

With ESR you CAN'T play authentic games from other region. You need to make ISO, patch it then burn and boot via ESR. And it only works with PS2 games.

Well, I determined that my PS2 is a V10, and I'm looking at a Modbo 4.0 or Mars Pro GM-816HD. I wish someone would chime in here though. I've seen plenty of discussion on modchips while searching here. Could someone let me know why I'm not getting much response?

Modchip installs are all pretty much the same.

There aren't modchips for Japanese games. For decent sales it'd have to be special enough to make up for no backup and PAL features.

If your looking for a chip that has no editing to the boot animations/logo's, the Magic V 5k6 might be what you're looking for if you have a v10 PS2. I used to have a Magic V installed in my old V9 PS2 long time ago and it never had any of that. It looked stock when booting up imports/backups

You can disable the boot logo, but it still shows "Infinity 1.93" under the playstation 2 logo when the game starts to load.

Why not just look for a Japanese set? Any set that ends with 00 in its model number (e.g. SCPH-77000) is a Japanese unit. This will give you the best experience for playing Japanese games, partly because there isn't a modchip that might interfere with some of the console's functions.

Just giving an idea, since it seems like some people can get second-hand sets for really cheap...

I was going to suggest this also. If all you want is to be able to play legit JP region games then maybe you should just import the console. It saves the trouble of installing or finding someone else to install a modchip and any problems that come with that.

Alternatively, you could try the SwapMagic product to boot Japanese original discs.

I think with the swap magic you have to modify the case though. Either a new flip top lid or take the front of the cd tray off. It will not look stock anymore.

With Swap Magic you removed the front bezel of the tray. You can put it back on, it's held on by screws. Still I think importing a JP console is the way to go. It's simple.

Thanks for the replies. I just checked and saw these today. I don't know why I didn't get an email notification when they were posted, the notifications were working before. Anyway, would a stock Japanese PS2 be unable to play my US games? I don't mind installing a chip, I just want one console that will play both regions.

Well without a mod chip or some kind of swap method, yes.

Forget about Mod chip crap. Since you got a Phat PS2. You should go for Harddrive with Network adapter. So therefor you can download or copy your PS2 game onto your PS2 harddrive and play it from there.

    something like this

I have one and it much better than doing modchip and save time open your PS2. You can play any region PS2 game also it would increase lifespan the PS2 laser and motor aswell.

    All you need is

    1 - PS2 Network Adapter
    2 - IDE harddrive from 20GB to 2TB

Here the link If you are interesting.

Uhh so what is he going to do about PS1 imports or backups? HDLoader doesn't work at all with PS1 games.

Ah bloody hell. I forgot about that he wants PS1 games. Like what MattZillia said, just get the Japaneses PS2 console. This would save hella alot of time doing the modchip and could save disappointing too or risking damaging the system.

Harddrive with Network adaptor always better the Modchip though.

    ...
it's quite difficult setting up pops, get used to hex editing parts, user partition setup etc....(headtest)
    ...
cue the the pops/ps2 experts! :friendly_wink:
    ....
