He mentioned wanting to play American PS1 games too, so that would have to be modded as well.

I know but having US and Jap console is easier and simple and avoid doing the modchip . He got US PS2 console, so getting Jap PS2 console is not that expensive to get.

Never understood that reasoning, personally I'd rather have one console that'll play as many games as possible rather than add clutter by having another console *just* to play imports. Plus there's plenty of professional modchip installers out there, I actually had APE on here add a ModBo 4.0 chip to my fat PS2 and it's still working fine two years later.

Yeah, why would I want to take up extra shelf space and use up another A/V input when I could have just one system that plays everything instead of two? I bought a Mars Pro GM-816HD yesterday, it's on the way.

Sure but always a chance that Modchip always goes wrong in the future. Modchip could mess the PS2 system anytime when power is on. It could happen a year or three years time. I sent my PS2 to the professional to install modchip. Work great for 3 years until it somehow destroyed my PS2 motherboard. Since then I used PS2 harddrive and Network adapter and still works great to this day. I recommend anyone to use that method than instead using Modchip.

Let be realistic here, PS2 slim hardly clutter any space in your room or living room. They are so small.

doesn't the action replay/gameshark defeat region lockout?

No. Atleast on PS1 the "region coding" and the copy protection are the same mechanism. PS2 is very likely the same way. You can't boot an import disc without doing something that would also boot a burned disc. The only exception that I'm aware of was in the PS1 era there were "Anti-Piracy" Modchips which would only bypass the region lockout by only partially patching the security string. Basically on PS1 each disc contained a four character security string like SCEA or SCEE. So if your system was North American it would only allow reading from discs that had SCEA encoded on them. The anti piracy modchip would presumably watch for the disc to provide SCE and then inject it's own final character to make sure it matched the region of the console being used.

Anyway, the whole point is that on the PS1 (and likely PS2 too) the copy protection and region lockout are intertwined.
