Well, whether or not it looks washed out or not is of personal taste. The sad thing is, most gamers these days (even the hardcore ones) really don't know when the games display resolutions have been altered. Very few companies these days seem to care either. Sega being the only one putting out many games with "proper" modes (Sega Ages series), Arika's two Cave ports, and a handful of J-RPGs. Namco is probably the worst offender w/ what they've done to their Tales Of. The SFC and PS games were beautifully drawn. Then, starting with ToD2J, they started mixing really nice looking high-res sprites, with low-res backgrounds, and threw in shitty 3D to boot. The sprite scaling has gotten progressively worse, and the upcoming Tales of Destiny remake looks like it will take awards in "unnecessary sprite scaling" category. The sprites get up to 2 to 3 times the size they've been drawn. proof. Taito is a close second. The Taito Memories collections, both of their Cave ports, and the Psikyo collections (Taito published these, right?) all have interlaced displays, whereas their originals of course, do not. I know I sound like a broken record, and this is not a big deal to most. It's also talked about extensively on other "old game forums" (mine, shmups, etc.) but considering there's SOOO many shitty games coming out these days, is it so wrong to want the handful of ones I might buy to be as perfect as they can be? I think the argument for a forum dedicated to something as manical as buying dev hardware (for the sake of owning it in many cases) is fair game. EDIT: Here is a good thread w/ a list of PS2 games that are displayed properly and improperly.
Well i see your point and at times it is cringing to play these 2d fighter collections with akward resoloution and such. I have gunstar heroes treasure box and i must say i loved all the display options. I was really amazed you could change teh setting to make the game look like its really running on the genesis.
Assuming you're using S-Video or RCA on a run-of-the-mill NTSC TV, this is yet more proof that disproves S-Video not handling 240p. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to see the difference in interlace and non-interlace mode.
Sega released several Saturn games (including NiGHTS) on their download service a few years ago that were emulated. They'd bought the Girigiri team. So flawless Saturn emulation is not as tough as you might think (at least, not now that there are multiple working emulators).
having a classic game means keeping the old menus, too. i dont mind pixels stretched, if done properly, because 2x2 can be 4x4 and i ll sit at a x2 distance compared to what i would back in the day of lowrez.
Hmm, if they are emulated, then my question is this: What type of arcade emulator do they use (One provided by Microsoft? Custom made?), and how powerful is it? If they are emulated, then I have a feeling they share some simularities and use similar emulators (Menu selection, 360 options, etc)
Hum... Looks emulated though to me, they spent quite sometimes to release it on the 360, I was hugely disappointed when I downloaded it and saw the old arcade graphics, I wish they could have done a little better than that, the mix between the old menus and the new live menus is quite strange too. Sabre
The delay was due to the fact that microsoft has an extremely strict approval process when it comes to arcade titles. And baisicly what the delay was mostly due to reducing the lag as much as possible. Not only that, the games a 50mb download. Belive me this is no emulation with a file that size. You will furthur notice when you start playing, there are some tweaks here and there that did not exisist in the arcade. There is a possiblity it might be ported from the psx sf2 collection due to the random occurene of the same type of now loading font, but when it shows up its barely a second and a half. I can tell you for sure that vampire savior collection and street fighter alpha/zero anthalogy are definetly direct arcade ports. Now as far as snk collections are concerned they are definetly emulated. Its most obvious based on button layout, and the way the resoloution is in most games.
Generally any thing that is re-released through emulation (whish is about 99% of any subsequent generation re-release) has a custom made emulator. I think there are some Korean and other Asian PC releases of games which are hacked up versions of MAME w/ a Rom, but just about any official release will obviously not be so dodgy.
