So the beta build is out and I have to say I love it. So much so that I've set it as my main OS over Snow Leopard. The new gestures and features sounded like a nightmare to me at first but after a little time I've really begun to love them. Full screen programs in particular. Anybody else given it a try yet?
No but I didn't realize the beat was even out yet. I'll probably have to download it and install in on my MBA. Can you post screen shots? -Disjaukifa
Lol just uploaded a load of pics to Facebook then deleted them. There's not much I can show you beyond the Apple website but it's a very powerful upgrade (full 64bit Kernel for none Macbook pro's which is nice seeing as everything I had on Snow Leopard ran in 64bit mode other than the OS). ASLR file protection. Heaps more personal security features. Each program has a built in Time Machine and permanent auto save feature so every character you write for example is logged and you can rewind the document at anytime, same works for programs, don't like an update? Immediately roll back. Saving is pretty much a thing of the past, however it's really simple to override it. There are a few things I don't like. Firstly is the removal of the light on the dock indicating which programs are open. I don't know how they've done it but you can have pretty much every program open and ready to go and it never slows down the system. I've had safari with 6 tabs, Xcode, iTunes, Preview, Finder, Star Wars Empire at war, Tweetdeck and iChat all open and running simultaneously and somehow it handles it. Good but I'd like to know what is open and what isn't. There's a new Mail client which is way better than the previous Mac mail. There's a new "internet accounts" option in System preferences which handles all of the email accounts you may have and manages them separately in each application which might use them (Mail iCal etc.) All in all it's very impressive. Underneath the gimmicks is a seriously powerful OS.
I didn't think you could get it with the 99 Developer's membership . . . I thought it had to be one of the other packages that cost more. -Disjaukifa
Being a developer I got it for being a $99 member. However there are other ways of getting it and I've verified that those ways do work perfectly with no time limitation or silly hacks to do.
My MBA is running the fans like crazy and the scroll is now reversed which I hate, when I do a two finger motion down I want the screen to go down, now I have to do a two finger up to scroll down . . . very confusing. -Disjaukifa
It mimics the iPhone and iPad. I hated it to but it's amazing how you get used to it. Not sure about the fan thing, I guess each system is going to be slightly different. Runs as smooth as silk on my Machine (2009 Unibody white Macbook). There are only 2 things which are really buggy and that's launchpad and the system won't sleep. The sleep light comes on but the screen stays active. BUT for a Beta release it's incredibly stable in my eyes.
Just finished re-installing 10.6, its probably the fact that I don't have a nvidia based Macbook Air. I think if I had one, it would have run perfectly. -Disjaukifa
I'll probably wait. I've thought about buying a developer package but the fact is I doubt I'll ever make an App for iOS.
Apple have nearly run out of big cats to call OS X... Next they will be asking staff for cat breeds.. OS X Korat, OS Manx, OS X Turkish Vankedisi... Anyway I digress...
The whole point is that it's like the iPhone. If RAM is needed, the application saves state and then it opens as if you never shut it... hence never needing to know what is open and what's not. Philosophy being: "Why do we need to know what's open?". Either wait or source it elsewhere for free. It's a very early build and is not stable at all. Snow Leopard still has a lot left to give, so I will be sticking to that. I might install this on a partition though, for giggles. I'd never make this my main OS until it's stable... I usually wait until the 10.X.2 or 3 stage before upgrading.
Probably wise as stability seems to be Mac dependent. Other than the sleep issue, I'm perfectly happy.
Sometime late this summer if the you believe the rumors, I myself think it will be about this time next year. Anywho, put on my pegleg and parrot and visited my favorite port. Midway throw the download, remembered that I was a registered Mac Dev and got the beta from the source. Installed it, played with it for 6 hours, made multiple comments to both myself and facebook regarding future of OSX and its path to lockdown, turned on glowy spheres for open apps under Settings->Dock and turn off backwards scrolling under Settings->Mouse, googled about for why the new Macbooks have FPGAs embedded on their logicboards, sighed, did fresh install of 10.6. Its not bad, but I have this feeling that I'm going to be one of those people that hold on to the previous release like their lives depend on it.
I'm holding out for Mac OS X Housecat. Is there anything significantly different about the design of the non-fullscreen OS? I guess the fullscreen apps and the Mac App Store aren't such a bad thing, but I just really hope they don't start forcing that shit down our necks like they did with the iPhone. I still want to be able to download applications that aren't necessarily approved of by Apple. If they take away that ability, I might have to move to Linux.
They probably will start forcing it. They love the iPhone. People love it. Fuck. I might well be going back to Windows after a 12 year break! Having said that, Windows 7 is rather good.
