Macbook Air - yay! or nay?

I take it all back about Macs - my mini won't give me back my sodding DVD. I tried every thing.

 

Oh, do I love Ballmer.

on a macbook i used to reboot while holding the mouse button and eject button, it always worked.

 

Tried everything I can find on the net for the mini. Nothing. Poss have to strip it down.

 

Nay. What a depressing thread, with all the blight in the world I hate to see people GIVING money to Apple. Does anyone actually compute with their computer anymore?

I somehow manage adequately with a $350 netbook (now worth *$200*) as my PRIMARY system. It's been on ~16/7 for soon to be 2 years.

I can:
-routinely keep 50-100 Firefox tabs open, many with flash content
-watch 720p H264 movies @ 30 fps
-compile a 5K+ line C program in a minute or so
-synthesize and route huge FPGA designs in <5 mins
-run any reasonably optimized emulator not broken by SpeedStep @ 60 fps
-restart only like once a week, sleep/hibernate the rest of the time

and this is on a shitty Atom N270 w/ Intel 945 & XP. I'm sure if I tried I could do a lot more with it too... What are you people doing so 1337 that will remotely require the Air's specs?? Games on an 11" computer? Really? Yeah I could go for SSD too but that doesn't justify it being 5x as expensive as my netbook.

OEM licenses are insanely cheap while Apple hardware, throwaways and support are not.

I agree with Calpis, I have a Acer Aspire one netbook (Atom N270) which I use as my primary system. It is on most of the time with it sleeping or hibernating when I do not need it or have to travel with it.

I do not do anything as fancy as Calpis does but I can still

Watch HD TV programs using a 3rd party H.264 decoder, even on a screen the is true HD 1920x1080.
Use Adobe Indesign, QuarkXpress to design labels and captions, normally on two screens.
Use several web browsers at the same time (as IE, Firefox and Chrome all have advantages and disadvantages depending on what website you are trying to browse).
I also use an external DVD drive to write DVDs and CDs, which I can do using only battery power using the two ports that are side by side of each other.
Copy without additional hardware the contents of a SD car to another one.

And generally do lots of other things, now I have used a netbook I can't see me going back to a notebook.

The only times I have seen the air have been on planes and they have been used as glorified movie players where I have seen people tapping away on netbooks \ notebooks doing real work.

 

Apple computers being "more high-quality" than the competition is pretty much a myth that's annoyingly widespread, especially since didn't they recently switch production of their laptops to a worse company?

 

I agree. I have a PICO ITX Intel Atom system about the size of a CD jewel case (Wireless, Ethernet, 2.5 HDD, HDMI out, USB, etc) just sitting in a corner. It sits as a server 24/7. I can SSH/NX in to it and get all my computing done from that little box. Heh, most people assume it's a tiny router.

Wozniak did the hardware design, but Jobs was the man behind the marketing and business.

 

Wasn't it Jobs that convinced him to sell the machine though? Yes.
