If you pay enough attention to the games you played, you probably already heard, even in recents games, sounds and graphics coming from old games. Exemple? When you use a computer in perfect dark; that sound must be one of the sounds i heard the most in lots of different games, And that's not always in games from the same compagny either. With more complex games, with more complex scenarios and graphics, or maybe because there's some lazy developers out here, this trend seems to be more and more used. I think its strange to get a flash of a n64 game when im playing on xbox, just because both games used the same sound, with a 6 year difference. It sometimes completly destroys the atmosphere too. But that doesnt stop here, movies are at it too. Golden eye Fire ricochet? I must have heard that in almost 10 different movies so far, and im not even joking. It bugs me alot. This trend have been seen in alot of released/upcoming games on DS so far, sometimes they just mask it a bit, but if you have good hears and eyes, you have no problem to recognize it. Heck, i even saw RPG maker RTPs graphics in screen shots of an upcoming DS game recently (dont remember the name, sadly). I mean, i know The DS isnt about graphics, but man a bit of creativity would be apreciated. Even the team behind That strange pokemon game on DS used graphics from anothe game, and its a first party team. Want a great exemple? here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PioZ3ievw-c Its a tactical rpg for The DS. Graphics are disguised a bit, but its pretty obivious, especially towards the end. Note that not every graphics are from that game, but most of them are with little changes, that's why its a good exemple. Can you find from where its coming from? I just thought i'd made a thread about this trend in the industry.
I've always held the belief that as the industry grows more and more to the point where games take longer and are more expensive to produce this would happen in increasingly large amounts. I agree that it is becoming a trend, I can't entirely blame them most of the time since it's too tempting to do BUT there's a limit, RPG maker and stealing sprites is just too much.
Just because you see or hear repetition doesn't mean it's stolen. Just like any other industry game developers often purchase sound effect / music / art libraries which can be used royalty free or for a particular title. It is no different than licensing a physics engine from a third party. -hl718
Yeah, I can see your Point Cahaz, hearing the same weapon noises in seperate games triggers the connection. Hell, sometimes I hear Resident Evil door noises on TV and it puts me off the show. But as hl718 says, they just purchase libraries of sounds and use the ones they feel best fit. On the point of the similar graphics in that Game, sure it pretty much follows from Chrono Trigger on a graphics standpoint, but alot of people are looking for that. You yourself quote RPG maker, its style of graphics were specifically designed to catch those interested into the pixelated pseudo-anime style art. Chances are its very similar because they've done their research and know that that style of game with that look will generally sell very well on looks alone. *edit* Spelling mistakes :/
I heard the Doom door opening sound on some nascar commercial, and that was the first thing I told my dad heh. But I know most just come in packs, so what they can use for cheap, is used.
I'd be surprised if the Doom door sound was used in an advert, since the id guys always recorded their own sounds. It would have to have been lifted straight from the game, and there's no logic in doing that. It leaves the producers open for lawsuits, and the sound itself probably doesn't have the audio fidelity required for a huge advert. I think mostly these are just similar sounds/graphics. As TheDeathcoster pointed out, imitation means potential sales.
Does anyone know of that "police sound" that is always used? In some movies involving Police, you hear that woman saying "Code Nine"...and then something else, cant remember. But you know? That kind of messes the atmosphere up for me.
I do see a lot of Chrono Trigger in this game. And yes, some FF6, but a lot of the style is very Chrono Trigger- ish. I see your point and agree... but I still REALLY want this game. Heh!
I noticed that the child laughter in the beginning of Diddy Kong Racing is used on some advertising commercial.
