I think by definition every country's is, since not all crimes are reported. It's still bar none safer than the west across the board. Seriously -- where will you NOT go b/c it's dangerous?

I can't comment. Do you act tough b/c of your small penis?

Japan may be a relatively safe country compared to others but you make it sound like the west is nothing but violent crime. I feel pretty safe but then again over here we are allowed to shoot back. :p

Well, I think every major city in the states has a part of town that I would never walk into, and I wouldn't want my wife walking around pretty much any of part (even the suburbs to an extent) by herself at night. Chances are low, but they're there. I don't give a fuck what she does here...especially in the city. The chances for attack rise the further you get out. And that's just violent crime. Forget the fact I left my bicycle unlocked in various places around my neighborhood (in front of shops and stuff) for over 24 hours 3 times this year. It was always there when I went back. :)

Again, that's why I find it so odd he's in jail. If she wasn't abducting, he shouldn't be either.

The Japanese government has stripped him of his right as a parent. It is not a parental abduction. It is a straight up kid napping as far as they are concerned.. Crazy I know, but this is the problem.

The only joints in Japan are the ones you smoke. There is no joint ownership of a house (seriously - you die, your wife inherits and gets fucked on taxes) and there's definitely no joint custody of children. This is the very definition of irony, since in Japan, it takes a guarantor for fucking anything. You make 100x your rent a year? Doesn't matter - you still need a guarantor. In a sense, they make you responsible for just about anyone other than your spouse.

    How deliciously fun...

smoking weed in Amsterdam isn't a crime either but if you come back to Japan and are found to have partaken (via whatever enforced test) then that IS a crime.

The Japanese : Retarded rules, ass backward thinking and double standards.

    Japan
so i assume they will hand over the mother to the US to face the kidnapping charges she faces there then?

Oh that's right, that's classed as a parental abduction so it's not a crime! And she's japanese of course

Japan has never handed over anyone to anyone... at least not America. They have no extradition agreement. There are some very famous cases over the years of people hiding out in this sorted little berg.

Baldness: the evidence of having real balls.

can't forget the Japanese student in France who ate the German girl he asked over for dinner.. the guy got returned to Japan and set free due to a technical error..he checked himself out of the clinic and apparently has since written books and showed up on countless TV shows.

What do you have to do in Japan to get in jail? I mean, what does a JAPANESE person have to do to get into jail? Blow up a subway like that one guy?

-Be at fault in a car wreck which results in a fatality
    -Possess illicit drugs (even marijuana)
-Commit and be found guilty of fraud, assault, rape, murder, etc.

Similar stuff, but the car thing they are noticeably stricter on here than in the west... the states, anyway. But don't pretend escaping on a technicality is unique to Japan. While Japan may have perfected the art of coercing false confessions, I'd be shocked if anyone was better than the US in technicality abuse.

Ride a bicycle that's not registered in your name...

They can hold you for a month without conviction for j-walking if they want.

You could have been arrested for sodomy in many states until recently. The chances of incarceration for something petty is miniscule. Far lower than being incarcerated in the US and being sent home the next day (public intoxication for L@Ls.) You generally have to have done something pretty bad, harmed someone, or caused damage that you clearly cannot pay for.

The most common form of punishment is the talk of shame, or a call to one's wife and/or employer.

    EDIT: It's 23 days, btw.

Oh yeah, isn't that the truth. I've been stopped a few times by the pigs while driving or "Speeding" as they call it and the first thing they always ask is "Where do you work?" to which I say "that has nothing to do with it. Anyway, I don't need a job I'm rich." God, I love being sarcastic to Japanese police. I'd never do it in the UK but then again they probably wouldn't pull me over for no reason.

    23 days is long enough!!!

Actually, I did know someone when I first moved here (first-hand) that spent the day held at a police office because the bike he was using wasn't registered to him. They wouldn't let him go until they'd tracked down the owner (the guest house/hostel owner) and make sure the bike wasn't stolen. Bloody nazis, they were.

Of course, I can name many more incidents where the worst that happened was a call to the employer or a fine paid to fix the front door of the apartment that was damaged when my friend trying to force open when he drunkenly got apartment buildings confused.
