Playing it now. Very disappointed in how much they dumbed-down the RPG elements (almost non-existent now) and screwed up the combat (replaced overheating with an unnecessary and overly restrictive ammo system).

The writing is excellent though. Just launched a planetary survey probe on Uranus. The AI's vocal response was: "Really, Commander?"

Just re-finished the first game in anticipation, it's not out until the 29th here. Going to try and snag a CE w/o a preorder...

Are you playing as a soldier?

_I_ am, and noticed this too if that helps.

Also, is it just me or is there almost no drops in this game? And the guns don't show any stats? Perhaps I'm remembering ME1 incorrectly...

I heard playing as a soldier is like a totally different game.

Yeah, soldier. I never liked how they had the powers set up in the first one (stop, choose, start, wait, repeat) and they haven't done much to change it for this one except remove powers and decrease the wait time.

Yeah, same. I never used anything but weapons in the first game.

I don't know how other people feel about the first ME but the whole time I was playing it, I felt like I was missing something or playing the game wrong. It was a weird feeling. I don't know, it was probably just me.

I loved the system of the first Mass Effect, but instead of improving it, they basically scrapped it. Whatever, it allows me to catch up on other games instead of playing this one for any length of time yet, I just hope the narrative is worth it when I do get to playing it (and further hating the shooting aspects, Id imagine)

Won't be playing it until I get a new 360.

I loved ME1, really great game. Though I keep hearing these same comments about ME2 so not so sure if it's worth it.

@graciano: I've been playing TONS of Oblivion lately, as I've been sick for a couple of weeks and couldn't go outside, I took back my unfinished saved game and finished it, completed almost every single quest and now just finished Shivering Isles... and downloaded like 50+ mods from TES Nexus lol.

What platform are you guys playing on?

I'm tempted to ask my friend at EA to get me the pc version but i'm a little busy with a few psp games (khbbs, VC2, PSP2) & PS2 games (Yakuza2 & Radiata Stories). =/

I played the PC version for about an hour and a half. Framerate is noticeably crappier then ME1, and it doesn't scale I guess all that well, I dont know whats up with that.

The 360 version actually seems to have a better framerate than the first one. The only issue I have come across is stuttering when moving the ship around between galaxies.

Can't wait to borrow the first one off of my friend. Always been a fan of Bioware's RPGs and this game seems to be a mixture of all the best bits, if you could call it RPG-ish. :)

Yes, but I won't spoil it.

The first one is, yes. The second one is almost a pure 3rd person shooter; very disappointing. At least the story is good.

Heard the graphical differences with the PC version are considerable, did anyone played both?

    Enjoying it so far.

Sure, there it seems dumbed down, but that means much less time spent in menus and more time playing.

There are still ways to customize to your playstyle. Currently playing Infiltrator and maxing weapon damage(and headshot damage).

That's the problem: I want the "menu" time that a good RPG provides.

The story is excellent, and the dialogue is worlds better, but I agree, the gameplay itself was massively dumbed down. However, a different team (the Montreal team) is the one doing this, the original team is currently working on Mass Effect 3 as I understand it.

So hopefully, HOPEFULLY, ME3 will have the polish of ME2, but will bring back the more complex leveling up system, items, and planet exploration.
