'Master Burner' for Windows, based on 3D-Ages After Burner II ???

    what the heck is this?

    Master Burner game for Windows
    http://moedan.com/mb/

the page is all in Japanese.

It *appears* to be some sort of parody of 3D-Ages After Burner II which is for Playstation2. that, or it is a joke / fake / hoax.

there is a file to download, but I can't make it run.

    some pictures.

it's done by Shanghai Alice, so is probably a legit game. I'm downloading it now, but am at my parents for the week w/ just this laptop... games look like a steaming pile. :(

EDIT: Just peaked through the readme.txt. 4-stages and loops. Still nice of them to make a free game.

  3. It's part of that beautiful and very distinctly Japanese genre known as doujin games - games done as hobbies or side projects by amateur coders, more often than not based on an established license (usually anime) or game style. Usually released for free or at a reasonable price (<$20) for a nice commercial printing job, but reasonably long playable demos are usually always released as well.

Western gaming has it's independent/free games scene too, but it's nothing compared to this.

I'd heard of the game a few days ago on Insert Credit, but I didn't know it was a Shanghai Alice production - I might have to take a look at it. I loved Perfect Cherry Blossom and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, but I haven't gotten around to playing the fighter that was the joint project between Shanghai Alice and Twilight Frontier. Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with both of those groups/individuals.

OH! GSL, Yes, these guys are great!

We played Imperishable Night on a friend's giant screen (via S-Video Out) the other day, for example, and everybody was just... tripped out with the "equalizer" (the insane bullet patterns, actually, he he) and we (my bunch of friends and I) love the hell out of it and most of the scene. There's also this fighter with lolicon girls that's insanely fun to play, though I can't remember the name.
And in the 90's there was Idinaloq and that other 3D graphiqued shooter... one of then even had an animated intro and all.
    Great stuff.

Just to clarify, Master Burner isn't developed by Shanghai Alice but by DNA Softwares, which occasionally borrows SA's characters for use in their own games (they also made a sorta-interesting Gain Ground clone). I didn't enjoy this game a great deal, the levels have a very scripted feel compared to the original After Burner. But since it's free, I'm in no position to complain.

It seems that Shanghai Alice's next game will be a 2P battle shooter in the vein of Twinkle Star Sprites. Looks promising.

I can't make it run either.
Even if my machine does support Japanese, I get gibberish in the error message instead, so I can't quite determine what's wrong.

    Something about Luna3D.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Why does the very last thing on the page say "Original Game Shanghai Alice" then? I don't keep up with their stuff (Perfect Cherry Blossom was good, but not enough to make me gaga) so am kinda confused.

I had the same problem. You may need to install the latest version of Direct X.

It's just a engrishy way of saying that Shanghai Alice owns the series of games on which Master Burner is based. And have you had the opportunity to play the full version of Perfect Cherry Blossom? I ask because many people think they've played the final version when they've actually only played the demo (the demo is only three stages, whereas the complete game has six stages + two massive extra levels). I prefer Embodiment of Scarlet Devil myself, it plays a little more like a traditional shooter than its follow-ups.

For anyone who happens to be interested, here is a complete list of games in the Touhou series which have been put out by Zun (the sole member of Shanghai Alice, he does all of the graphics, music, and programming for each the games):

    -For the PC-98-
    1. Highly Responsive to Prayers (very strange game, reminiscent of Arkanoid)
    2. The Story of Eastern Wonderland
    3. Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream (2P battle shooter)
    4. Lotus Land Story
    5. Mystic Square

    -For Windows-
    6. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (demo)
    7. Perfect Cherry Blossom (demo)
    8. Imperishable Night (demo)

And the upcoming Phantasmagoria of Flower View. He also collaborated with Twilight Frontier on Immaterial and Missing Power, the fighting game which Greatsaintlouis mentioned above.

Still confused. I thought this was an 'original'... although an Afterburner rippoff.

I only played the Demo of perfect Cherry Blossom. I might give it more time later, but right now I've got a stack of shmups to go through. I'm also well into Ketsui & ESPGaluda... and I can only play so many manic shmups at one time.

  13. I've only played the demos of Perfect Cherry Blossom and Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil, but they are both on my list to buy, especially now that I've found an importer that doesn't jack the prices up nearly $10 *cough*himeya*cough*. Haven't tried Imperishable Night yet though.

Picking up copies of Eternal Fighter Zero, Airrade, and possibly PKA sadly take precedence over the Shanghai Alice games right now, though with my limited budget :(. Then again, I can get two of the games for the price of EFZ...

it runs really slow on me, and no bgm, is it only me?

  16. Possibly, although I've never bothered to check. I'd sortof like the packaging anyways. That's just my style, and why I'd never be a good pirate. :-D

I think so - it works fine for me. Running anything big in the background, perhaps, or a virus scan or something?

Ah, the files are in LHZ format which the Japanese love to use for some odd reason while the rest of the world uses RAR or even ZIP. Anyway, get yourself WINRAR (Free as well) which can unpack these files as well as many other compressed files.

GaijinPunch, do you know what it is with Japanese and LHZ files? Why use them? Is it because they know the rest of us use RAR or ZIP and that way we'll be completely confused by their files which results in us never using the software within them :p ?
