'Master Burner' for Windows, based on 3D Ages After Burner II ???

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by GigaDrive, Apr 5, 2005.

  1. I remember back in the days of 486s and shareware compilations on CDs that LHZ was slightly common - along with the forgotten ARJ format - but now it seems a given that anything I download that's Japanese is in LHZ. Hell, they even seem to put their .exe installers in LHZ files! Oh well - WinRAR opens anything. :-D

No clue. LHZ and LHA are old school. Maybe these guys are just nostalgic for them. While RAR was convenient back in the day, broadband has made it kind of unnecessary IMHO. Maybe they jus want to 'challenge' people a bit before they even install the game. :)

While we're on this topic, what happened to ACE?

Dunno - not a lot, it seems. 7-zip seems to be the way to go for the future though - I've got a few ROMsets which where in these, and they were like a third the size they would be if they were normal ZIPs. Check out http://www.7-zip.org/ - it can handle RAR and ZIP and a load of other formats too (everything *BUT* LHZ though!), it can allegedly compress ZIPs better than other programs, and it's actual freeware unlike WinZip and and WinRAR and their fake 30-day trial nagware crap.

According to this comparison, 7z is the clear winner. It's reasonably old I think, I heard of it quite a few years back. I'm going to convert to it now, those results are too good to ignore.

Interesting comparison there... and look how LHA is the worst on every single compression chart! Silly Japanese...
