Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have gone wrong? I've not tested this console much before, so can't even say when it happened, but it won't run Master System games (loaded from an EverDrive) and some homebrew roms seem crash and lock up as well... Any idea at all where I should look for the problem? Thanks! Edit: sorry, wrong section!
Could be time to tighten up and clean the cartridge connector on the system. I had that problem a few months ago myself If I remember correctly Master System uses different pins on the cartridge connector, so that may be why Mega Drive games work, but not Master System.
But he's playing roms from a flashcart. He's not using the adapter to play actual master system carts.
It could be that the trace that enables SMS mode is broken or that pin is dirty. Have you checked that trace and that pin?
Flashcarts behave a little different from real carts. JVC X'eye has problems loading master system roms on everdrive.
Could the Z80 have gone bad? or something that controls it? Project MD: http://oerg866.titandemo.de/projmd/ Will load the game, then crash when I select "Start" however, it works on other consoles. Currently no Master System games I've tried will display anything, they just result in a black screen (and the EverDrive load light, on the cartridge, seems to just keep flashing)
If I recall the Z80 is used for PSG sound on the Genesis/MD so if that failed, you shouldn't have certain sound effects in games that use it. Some of the address lines could be damaged or dirty. That's my guess.
This all started when I started adding a "crystal clear audio mod" to this console, which has now been removed. Problem is, I don't remember ever properly testing the console before, so I'm not sure if it was always faulty, or I broke it However, I can't see anything wrong with my audio mod, although only one channel works, and I'm not sure if the psg channel works, as master system games don't work :/
If you have a flash cart or can make a reproduction cart there are some test tools for the Genesis which also tests Audio and Z80. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...-a-Model-2-VA1&p=728145&viewfull=1#post728145
Cheers, I was looking for something like that Strange thing, this console was playing Sonic 1 (for the Mega Drive) through one channel, but then Sonic 2 (also for the Mega Drive) was completely silent... Probably should have fully and properly tested this console before I started removing parts, as it did come in a bulk lot of stuff, which could very well have meant it was faulty...
The PSG, and FM channels are both still outputting something, so I assume I didn't damage anything with the mod. This isn't going through a circuit, just measuring the outputs with an oscilloscope... So, what would cause the Master System games to not load from the Everdrive, as well as some Mega Drive roms (Project MD, and Bad Apple, are two I've tried and failed)
Using the test cartridge, I get fm, psg and dac. However, some games, such as sonic 2, I get no audio whatsoever...
It seems this console isn't happy at all. I've removed the crystal clear audio mod, and installed it into another Mega Drive, and it works fine. Strange how this bad console won't load Master System games, and doesn't have any audio in a lot of Mega Drive games... While seemingly working fine with other games...
Sounds like the Z80 processor is the culprit since it does some audio on Genesis side and is responsible for Master System games playing.
Helder is on to something. Try inspecting the traces and stuff around the Z80 and replace it or the surrounding components if possible.
