There are VERY small nuclear reactors in existence, and there have been for many yerars. Think of spy satellites, they often had one as their power source. These are quite safe, all it is is a small mass of fast decaying material. The disposal is the hard part. This is what they put in space probes in the 70's, now they try to use solar.
