hi members , i read that if you solder a 100nf Capacitor to legs 1 and 8 you will get better boot rates with a MM3 modchip for PS1.

I'm a little stuck tho by nf , do people mean uf ?

also what Voltage should i get ?

No, 100nF = 0.1uF - the voltage rating just needs to be higher than the supply voltage (3.3V), so pretty much anything will work.

hi again , just wanted to say i have received the 0.1uF Caps today and i have a question. Obviously the Caps have positive and negative legs , i was wondering which way to solder the to the MM3 modchip.

Positive goes to Vcc, negative to ground. But only electrolytic capacitors have polarity. 0.1uF sounds like it's a regular ceramic bypass capacitor, in which case it can go both ways.

It's made a difference for me on a number of consoles.

You should really install the cap anyway on pretty much any ic

hi guys , i tried out my PS1 today to see if the boot times have improved and unfortunately not. I have been reading on this forum about re-routing the wires , i was wondering if i should route them all along the outer edge of the motherboard where ground lies ?

    currently it is like this.................

also i may be burning the chip not very well , it works but i'm not getting like consistent boots i'm getting like 50-60% success.

What programmer are you using and what chips?
Are they the old single write ones or the erasable ones, where did you buy them?

Have you tried a Mayumi 4 instead?

I can program you one and post it out if you are can't get it sorted

    Try shorter wires as well.

Isn't that really long wire a 4Mhz clock line? In that case, it will have spent all it's AC power over that long distance, and into the other board components, too! This couldn't work well if it's the case. The wires are too long anyway. The chip should be installed on the board so that the wires are much shorter.

hi guys i've been a bit busy with other gadgets but i'm back...............

    Programmer used

USB Microchip KIT149 PIC Programmer , i also have a TOP 3000 which didn't work probably due to settings

    Chips used and source

    http://au.element14.com/microchip/p...hLookAhead&searchView=table&iscrfnonsku=false

i haven't tried a Mayumi , i am going to try shorter wires as mentioned. I'm thinking flatten the chip and placing the chip in the center on the Sony CXD8606BQ , thoughts on this ?. I believe the laser is ok , to me it looks like a chip or wiring problem due to the way the Laser behaves. Btw i'm using Kingbo Flux and Kester solder so my joints are good. Thanks LeHaM for the offer it is appreciated but i have more PS1's and want to learn instead of the easy way out. Also this is for my own use and not selling chipped consoles.

    chat soon

i'm back with a improvement , i have shortened the wires and get 7 boots out of 10. I tried it with the Capacitor and i got 1 boot out of 3 so i gave up there , i believe it was only going to get worse.

what it looks like to me is when i press the door switch down and turn on the PS1 the MM3 doesn't do it's job and gives me a ( Please insert disc message ). Also if i press Reset after this message the game boots. I'm wondering if the 7 boots out of 10 for a MM3 is normal ? , also i'm thinking of trying a Mayumi ( does it get 10 out of 10 boots ? )........

It's really a combination of a few things... could be your install, laser, console, media, all of the above? 7/10 is fine IMO, and I've seen the same boot rates on consoles before. You're fine.

Out of curiosity, what PIC are you using? 12F508?
