I'm not sure which port of Doom he's referring to (the last time I played Doom on Dreamcast was probably crt0's DoomDC over a decade ago) so I'm not sure if the source is available, but PPP support is being worked on in KallistiOS and if it is completed successfully it shouldn't be too difficult to add in modem support. Even if the source is lost, it would probably be a hell of a lot easier to just re-port Doom anyway.

Anyone know the transfer speed of the G1-ATA and the GDEMU? And cybdyn, whats the status of DCIO atm? Still working on it I hope?

it's a question for another thread about gd-rom drive emulation. i wrote about last status of dcio there...
Here we talk about device/adapter for G2 bus.

That's really cool. Did Anybody else test it? I'd love to give it a try if someone posts a win32 binary...

Really great work you have done so far Dreamcast. I hope you get the needed help you require to see this project off the ground and hopefully someday once perfected it can be "mass produced".

For the time being, the adapter is making use of the G2's 8-bit bus mode for simplicity. Regarding mass production, it's a goal, but it's going to be complicated by the lack of G2 connectors. An idea is to offer a mail in program where anyone interested in the project can send their modem and the connector / case can be reused to build and return a MOBAND adapter.

The project at the moment has largely been a proof-of-concept to determine performance advantages / stability with production logistics given minimal thought, so there is a lot to consider there.

The project is currently on hold as there have been recent developments in bringing more games online, so time is being spent pursuing that for now. In the meantime, I'm also looking at the possibility of rerouting the modem's syscalls to the serial port. The NexGen library that a lot of games make use of natively supports the serial port as a network device, but unfortunately it appears it's an option set at compile-time rather than runtime, so I'm unsure of the possibility of it.

If anyone familiar working with the DC at the lower levels needed to accomplish that, please reply here or PM me with ideas / suggestions.

Just as an update here: BlueCrab has made some fantastic updates to KallistiOS lately, and now KOS PPP/modem support has been completed in the current git version. See notes here: http://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=103142

So as far as I know, KOS applications should now be modem-enabled with some code changes and a recompile.

BTW, sorry slightly off topic: as far as I know, no one has actually tested this code with a real dial-up ISP, just dialing into a home LAN using a telephone line simulator and Netopia router. If anyone has a telephone line and dialup ISP they could use to test this code, it would be much appreciated. If you need assistance configuring and compiling the software, and you trust me, you can PM me the number you need to dial and the username/password for your account, and I will make you a CDI image you can burn to test it. I don't even have a phone line and I have a Netopia/TLS setup so I have no motivation to steal your dialup interwebz ;)

I actually do have all of the stuff necessary to do this. My phone line is an Ooma, but there's no reason it shouldn't work. We still have a dial-up line for work and I have an account there for testing things like this. I need to dig up the phone number, but I'll give it a shot. I would definitely need you to make the image for me, though, haha. What's the best way to burn a cdi anyway? I never really got into burning DC stuff (as much as I wanted to, heh).

You can drop an addin for CDI images into ImgBurn that I find works really well. Otherwise you'll have to install DiscJuggler itself (gag).

There is a guy that made a "universal" PPP adapter with a Raspberry pi:
    http://jmp.no/blog/cheap-overkill-amiga-network-adapter

My knowledge is very limited in this area, but this could be very interesting for a cheap solution.
I don't know about the transfer rates though? The article describes high latencies and low data rates, not sure if it limited by the Amiga 500 or the implementation itself.

IIRC - the DC Modem (ah Trick question there were ~3 different models!); the G2 Bus was used to directly feed it data (no DMA?) and directly twiddle the registers of the Rockwell chip itself.

Sooooo----- Cram one of those Uber-powerful 200+MhzARM Cortex MCU's in there and just use real-time programming to simulate all the modem behaviour in software.

(Good thing the chip was/is well document and basically common PC style Modem-on-a-chip with a custom SEGA bus adaptor)
