I call BS. Nobody could beat Contra on the first try. Unless... did you have the Konami code painted on the walls?

Yeah, the NES is the most temperamental system I have. I swear, I turn my back and it's not working again. What's worse, my Retro Duo emulates the thing horribly.

And exactly where i said that he played Contra first time in his life? Thing is - 8 years old kid connected console properly to a receiver which got tons of inputs and a remote which makes a space shuttle cockpit as simple as alarm clock by comparison :D Selecting right combination of input sometimes can be a quite difficult puzzle for many 30+ years old guys.

For Contra, well, when i was in school, we beaten US version of Hard Corps at least a dosen times, but i don't know if i'll be able to do it without cheats now. Kids often have better reaction and memory than trained fighter pilot. And back then games were a lot harder, you had to write passwords down and in games like Metroid, Eye of Beholder and others you had to draw your own map :)
I highly doubt that many modern gamers will be able to beat Battletoads :D

Ofcourse they aren't in the shape they were when they were brand new. But generally systems with trouble are probably due to dirty cartridges. One thing that definitely helps spread problems is rental games. Rental games get plenty of chances to collect crud which then can get on your system's connector and transfer to your other carts as well. Generally if you clean the games you will get a solid connection and have no problems. 10NES on the fritz? Again, the lockout chip is NOT the problem. The problem is the dirty cartridges and connector. Somewhere along came this idea that cartridge games require zero care and should always work.

SNES and Sega Genesis actually have the same issues too. I think what makes the NES get a bad rep is on the SNES and Genesis the game usually won't run at all. But on the NES you get a blinking screen. Sometimes a blinking screen that shows the game just starting and resetting. Only if you see the game starting and resetting is the problem the 10NES's connection pins. If you see nothing, chances are more signals are not making good contact. Also the NES is significantly older and perhaps had a greater lifespan in people's homes allowing more people to experience unmaintained cartridges and consoles.

You make a good point MottZilla. SNES always for me had trouble booting first time. Really any cartridge based system would get this issue now and then.

I'm going to have to agree with the Youtubers part. The majority of stuff I've seen has been obnoxious and overly profane. None of it is that funny, at least not to me.

Fuck I hate "engineered" content, in old internet terms "click bait"..

90% of YouTube is puff piece click bait BS! Prime example "tech youtubers", most are fine but the ones that fap over specs and that alone and then go and formulate their "own opinion" (which most of the time is just the same as most other people). For example take Chris Pirrillo, he used to be ok but now since he hit 40 he's been acting like his shit don't stink and that his ideas are the only valid opinion ever. He still has the nerve to complain that he doesn't make enough money off the internet, he's currently turning over about $1500 a week just from patreon, I don't care if he's making lots of money what annoys me is he makes out that he's broke all the time, don't forget he still makes a decent income from adds and affiliate programs. I think he realises his bubble is about to burst or something, I'm sure he is nice person but his appearance online lately is a contrast to that.

then you have people like David de Franco, I'm sure he's a nice bloke but a lot of his content is just click bait..

its sad :( there is soo much crap on YouTube that real content creators, like Yamako and a lot of other people on this very forum, never get a second look because they are just drowned out by these click baiters..

    rant over haha

just to clear anything up, there are lots of tech based channels on YouTube that do actually try and do produce sound content..
