I a getting 2 old PSX 1s and thinking of having one MODed, either by myself or some else if it looks hard. Is it hard, can a GAME SHARK due to the function sif I don't know if it's illegal or not to MOD your playstation in the states, so I am hoping it's okay talk about it. :/ -Ryan
"Well you say it's legal but I just showed this site to my mom and asked her and she said it's illegal, so it's illegal." Can't forget that logic!
So I take it, if I have a GameShark (original that plugs in the Serial port) I basically have a Playstation MOD. :/
Not exactly, I haven't used the gameshark method in almost a decade, if memory serves me the gameshark method still need's an authentic ps1 disc to be swapped. You are much better off using a modchip because the gameshark isn't 100%. However if you are dead set on the gameshark method here is a guide from over decade ago for the gameshark method which is better on the laser assembly than a normal swaptrick.
Thanks for the link takeshi385, I guess I don't know what done for a MOD. I've been doing a google search for the last 2 hours and I keep getting X-Box 1, X-Box 360, Playstation 3 and Playstation 2. Not many for the original playstation....
It's a programmed MCU that's connected to the PlayStation main PCB. The original mods used the Microchip PIC12C508 or 509 - depending on the code you use, you will need to solder anything from 4 to 8 wires between the PIC and the PlayStation main board. The later chips (with more wires) have additional features to try and get around the code put into certain games to detect modchips. Two of the most common sets of code are called "Multimode 3" (or just "MM3") and "Mayumi4.0" - these both work with the '508, although they have also been ported to more modern parts like the 12F629. There are plenty of installation drawings on the net - you just have to know what sort of board is in your machine (this is printed on the main board, and starts with "PU-" for example "PU-8", "PU-18", "PU-22") - so once you find that out just try googling something like "Mayumi 4 PU-18" and see what comes up.
At least in my country modding/chipping psx is not against the law. most shops here sells chipped psx consoles.
It depends I think. Modhacking but never running pirate games would count as an legal part, but since you bought the modchip, that could count as ilegal part. Sony doesn't care if you hacked or not your PSX.
It's a grey area. It isn't illegal to mod a system but to override Sony's protection is. But no one cares anymore about the PS1 kinda falls into abandonware more or less technically. Buying/downloading/selling a game is much more likely to get you in trouble but it isnt gonna happen unless you are flaunting this and making money over the selling of said material.
Speaking of the swap method, what GameShark CD based do I need to get that still allows the swap method. I watched a YouTube video of a guy that he had a Playstation One and he used the GameShark to boot the Playstation One, used a paper clip to hold down the door switch, took out the GameShark CD and put in his 'backup' and it worked. He stated that there is a version of GameShark CD that you can not do this trick because it requires the door to be open to and a real game to be put in. I would put an eBay link of what I think works, but I don't believe that is allowed in this section. Thanks for the help guys. -hugh
