Cool. Some nice games touted there for sure. I especially like Disempu and EPROM.

Yes, Sega had a modem for the Mega-Drive. In addition to Tel-Tel Stadium and Tel-Tel Mahjong, were there other games released? It sounds like a strategy game might have been developed for the modem then.

Anyway, take any and all predictions from EGM with a sack of salt. They had to fill empty pages sometimes, you know?

a few others. some were on cartridges that were playable over the modem with others, and some games were just downloadable through the modem.

*pout* I want to believe that Altered Beast 2 really existed

Quite a lot of those titles were actually released but like ccovell said, don't got by anything EGM tells you.

I believe "EPROM" was the Atari coin-op "Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters"
Came out around the same time and I remember seeing the name shortened by the press.

Shame we never saw the Arcade Moonwalker on the Megadrive, rather than that shambles of a game Sega saw fit to release.

just played that game the other day, hilarious. ;)
anyway, it'd be damn short for a console game, don't you think?

at least the music was ported 1:1

I've often heard references to Jewel Master as being the "unofficial" sequel to Altered Beast. If you recall, Sega of America opted to stop including (and selling) Altered Beast as part of their games offering because some "parent groups said the name of the game sounded demonic" (don't laugh, this exact quote was printed in an issue of Sega Visions magazine).

My gut tells me that Jewel Master was being developed with the intention of being released as ALtered Beast 2, but the name was changed at the last minute to keep parents happy or something.

Sonic Eraser and a crapton of Phantasy Star text adventures. Most of those were released by Sega around 2003-4 in their japanese GAMEHOMPO downloadable-emulated-pc-megadrive game service, and were leaked by Pachuka, but his page is down.

The usa/european Mega modem thing also had Garfield Lost Levels.

I know about the downloadable games. My question was whether there were other cartridges released that used the modem for competitive play?

wow, I'd never heard of Jewel Master being an 'unofficial' sequel to Altered Beast.... did Jewel Master come out ? (haven't had any coffee for hours, can't think clearly)

edit: of course it did. and I;m going to play it right now to see if there is even a hint of Altered Beastness in it.

what about this Mega CD game, 'Hyper Attax', did it come out?

sometimes I had though 'Hyper Attax' was actually A/X-101 or Detonator Orgun, but perhaps not ?

ok, cartridges that got released the used the modem for competitive play...so far I have:

    *CyberBall
*Tel Tel Baseball Stadium (or just Tel Tel Stadium)
    *Tel Tel Mahjong
*Shikinjoh ? (sunsoft) (not sure, no idea what this was)
*Advanced World War / Advanced Daisenryaku
(might be mixing this up with another game but there was almost certain a turn-based strategy game for the Mega Modem)

 Hyper Attax ! Some times these magazines make me laugh. First person shooting action? Adventure ? Just goes to show that mags back then and probably still today see a picture and make up a story to go with it.

That is Sol Feace by Wolf Team for the Mega CD also released in the states as a cartidge game under the title of Sol Deace (missing the intro of course)

I've got a bunch of scans regarding unreleased MD games that Nicola found in Italian games mags and sent to me a while back. I'll try to find time to upload them all over the weekend...
