I was Paying Ketsui today after filming for Retrocade (Yes Ave I still suck at it) and playing on my real Hori Real Arcade Pro VX SA (modded with Octagonal gate instead of a square gate) Makes for a more enjoyable shmupping experence.

Now I'm pretty sure duel modding this stick to work on my saturn will be a pain in the ass so I was wondering for the best shmup experience on the Saturn
what would be the best Arcade stick to use?

    I'm assuming this?

Both sticks are superb if you customize them with arcade parts. It's difficult, however, because at least the Virtua Stick doesn't have plugs but buttons' cables are soldered to the circuit board and you'd have to remove it with a solderin iron.

Or just buy a Saturn-adaptor for a good PS2 Hori-stick, that's what most people do.

I've been on the lookout for a HSS-0136 stick for a little while now. Does anyone have a good idea what a reasonable price to pay for a complete item would be in Japan? I get the feeling that paying more than 2,500 ¥ is too much. When I've found it for sale online it seems that people want quite a bit more for it.

2,500 ¥? LOL. For that you can maybe get some crappy plastic stick.

2500 yen is about right for a 0136.

Honestly though, you want to look at the specific joystick you're using, not a whole new arcade stick.

    Just buy a Seimitsu LS-32-01 or LS-56-01.

Remember now we're not talking about a stick for fighting. But Shmupping. Shmupping requires a whole different level of accuracy than a fighting game does.

Which is why I recommended two shmups specifically for accuracy.

    Some people, honestly.

For fighting I'd recomend a sanwa JLF or seimitsu LS-58-01.

This. I destroyed a perfectly good virtua stick trying to mod it. xD

I remember paying about $40-$50 each for my two virtua sticks few years ago. they look great, but as a stick, they feel pretty mushy and uses contacts instead of microswitches.

No problem. I've owned various sticks to get my own opinion on them and I currently use the LS-58-01 in my stick as I mainly play fighters. It's arse for shmups though.

Whatever is in the Hori SXVA (sanwa is all I know) is good for both fighters and Shmups but I find it more accurate for shmups especially since I added the octagonal gate. The stick resistance is just right for shmups VS my MAS sticks which are too tight.

If I could get that resistance in a stick for Saturn I'd be set.

Maybe you're thinking of the HSS-0130, which is the Pro model - it's worth significantly more.

    Thanks.

A HSS-0130 can easily go for 20'000yen+ on Yahoo (boxed and sometimes even loose), which is about $250-300.
The HSS-0136 is about $30-50 depending on the condition.

Both sticks are, however, not the nonplusultra despite their nonplusultra-looks, the parts are mushy and lame, that's why people mod them.

Mushy buttons? But mush is how Japanese arcade buttons are the VX SA Buttons are what you could say are Mushy but also super sensitive you just need to tap them for them to register.

So I've narrowed the Canidates down to the Hori FSSS, The HSS-0136 and the Eclipse stick but I need to research it more.

The Hori VX-SA uses microswitched Sanwa OBSF buttons. It also has a sanwa JLF. These are arcade quality parts and are designed to withstand plenty of abuse.

The parts in the HSS-0136 and HSS-0130 are just garbage parts that Sega decided to use.

Certain HSS-0136 have Seimitsu LS-56-01 apparently, but it's luck of the draw. I'd love one with an LS-56-01 already installed in the factory as I could leave the graphic intact without having to drill the old screws out or whatever to install a proper stick.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I'm aware of these criticisms - and that arcade quality components would make for a better game experience, but I don't think I have the time or know-how right now to do any sort of modifications. I'm drawn to the aesthetics of the HSS-0136 and I'm under the impression that it is the highest quality commercially produced Saturn stick.
