yeah im concidering venturing into a new console, and one of the three listed in the topic would be it. im only interested in the gaming-aspect (sorry no homebrew stuff). which is the most collectible? i know a monkey can operate the 1chip MSX but what about the others?, i dont want to be stuck with something like a japanese DOS to go thru to get a game going OH: which has the best games (all categories) that a japanese illiterate can play? this being the age of HDTV which has the best audio/visual capabilities? different revisions of hardware, which is the best? in short just go nuts about your favourite or let loose on the one you hate.. im still at the crossroad here and i might just decide to go back to my arcade kits after all..
these are all 4:3 video in output, so not so good for HD tv at all. you shouldn't have to deal with jap dos with any of those. you might get disappointed, by the graphics of these machines... maybe you should really go back to your arcade kits
MSX 2 Good things? It's possible to buy games for it quite easily. Most retro game shops do have a MSX section. Although some of the rarities are expensive there are a lot which can be picked up for peanuts. Lots of games are on cartridges which gives it a console feel, a lot of MSX games by Sega are the same as the SG-1000 versions due to the same hardware used by both machines but the boxes are larger and prettier. As it was popular in Holland it is easy to pick up a disk based MSX 2 within Europe. Bad things? Although a lot of these games will be MSX 1 based. Not a bad thing in itself but MSX 2 games look a lot lot better. Some games are on discs and a lot of the time the discs have lost data. X68000 Good things? It has some excellent conversions, a lot of games being near arcade perfect. Games are not that hard to find and a lot of them are fairly cheap. Bad things? It's a computer and although it's not hard to obtain, it can be tricky to get running. A lot of the arcade conversions are available on other formats and are easier to get. Games are not hard to get but as they are on 5.25" discs some games come on lots of discs and being magnetic medium, data can be lost. FM Towns Good things? Games are near arcade perfect Most games come on CD-ROM (and the ones that don't are likely to be Hentai or serious games). Has a console version in the FM Towns Marty and this can run the majority of games. Has a lot of Hentai games due to it being a PC with nicer hardware. Bad things A lot of games are expensive, so FM Town owners are either rich or in debt. Finding the games can be an art in itself. Most of the cheap games are likely to be Hentai games. A lot of the arcade conversions are available on other formats and are easier to get. I have an FM Towns Marty and a MSX 2 and I like both but they can be painful to love due to the difficulty of getting games compared to consoles... Getting an X68000 soon after I played one. Games I like (sans arcade conversions...) MSX Traffic Aleste 2 X68000 Nemesis 90 Overtake FM Towns Zak McKarren and the Alien Mind Benders [insert various hentai titles here]
i know this, i used the term "console" as thats what i plan on using it as, but yeah its the wrong word. i knew someone would get uptight about it great advice there jamtex i quite like the packaging of msx2/x68K games so im proboably leaning more and more towards one of those.. im just as much a collector as a gamer so that aspect is very important to me. i love older consoles graphics so i doubt i will be dissapointed whith that (2D forever!).
The Sharp X68000 out does the others easily in terms of shear gaming. Fantastic arcade conversiopns better than any other system in most cases !! Some look arcade perfect !! Strider pisses on the Mega Drive version as does ghouls'n' Ghosts. Final Fight is the arcade plus you've got the almighty Castlevania. Yakumo
does it have VGA out?, i recall seeing it hooked up to a monitor somewhere.. is there a sequence you have to go thru to get the games to boot or is it just plug'n'play?
I had planned on picking up a x68000 last here, but didnt because of not enough time to research all the makes and models. Do a search for x68000 gaming on these forums, theres a nice big thread with loads of information.
Marty all the way for me. Splatterhouse, BB, RI, Tatsujin Ou, Flyins Shark, Kyu Tiger, Lucasfilm, Ultimas. Many more. The big boxes are splendid too, and many games have little extras so there is good collector value for sure. The others are great too and I do plan on starting a collection of both. But Marty has more quality games I like, which I can't play great versions of on other platforms (unlike say some big 68k hitters, which are poor on MD/SFC next to 68k, but still great MD/SFC ports)
oh man, i had my heart set on a 1chipMSX, but i had to check out the x68000 packaging so i bought gradius 2 for 500yens (complete in excellent condition). the packaging for the games is incredible!! h: does anyone have any info on what signals the x68000 outputs? the VGA out on the 1chip MSX is a big draw for me.. (plus i always wanted to play MGS2) aaargh!
my bad, yeah im only interested in playing its original release (its proboably been emulated for a years too).
It's a 15 Khz signal. It will display on arcade monitors and a few old multi-sync VGA monitors. The monitor I have has BNC connectors in the back; it's that old! It works fine in the 256 pixel wide mode (on the VGA monitor), but has a problem with 320 pixel modes. The image displays with the edges in the middle. The monitor doesn't have enough controls to re-center the display. To use a VGA monitor, you'll need a Japanese 15 pin connector to VGA connector converter (or a rewired cable). Here's a pinout of the X68000 output: http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:japanese_rgb-15 I'm in the process of attempting to hook it up to an Arcade to S-Video/Composite conveter board. That should work decently.
there's also the pc98 right? I think the packaging for the games looks really nice though nothing out of this world: http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k46200647 there's some nice looking shooters for it as well (a compile made one too).
never thought of teh pc98.. anyways i cracked and bought a 1chip MSX.. i'll see how satisfied it makes me feel in about a month or two when ive had the time to build up a library of games :033: what are some good essentials to keep an eye out for? (all must be playable by a non-japanese speaker) im already gunning for the two metal gear games.. but what else?
if you go with a marty, you propably will never find any good games, unless waiting further 5 years to catch up a goldie for a small empire. if you go with a x68k, you propably will loose you patience before the game is ready to blast off. and the risks of damaged 5 1/4" diskettes will rob your last sleep. if you go with a MSX2, there are plenty of (also good) games out there to catch up, but non of them looking really better than titles on the FC or SMS.
