I'm on another new music kick....thought I'd get some recommendations. Not new music in terms of release date, just new music to me. I'm pretty much open to anything. I just finished Slipknot's self-titled album and now I'm on to Sublime. Next will be Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. and after that...?
something you might have not listened to is the court of the crimson king by king crimson... i always suggest the dark side of the moon, but i guess EVERYBODY listened to it at least once... also almost any album of the '80 from deep purple is a must. it all depends on what you are in the mood to listen to!
Some of my alltime favs: Siouxsie and the Banshees (everything >1978) Asobi Sekkusu Joy Division Golden Earring In Flames (anything older than 2006) KISS (ANYTHING!!11) also quite good: Chicks on Speed (album: "99 cents", don't know any others yet) Captain Funk (japanese, some amazing songs were featured in the jpn movie "Monday") Desert Planet (chipsound remix, in case you don't already know them) The Cure Bad Manners (ska, very chilling though fast) "Limited Express(Has gone?)" (j-rock, rather good but slightly chaotic) Jazz is always a good choice too. Among the known milestones like Miles Davis ect, there're also good newcomers like Satoko Fujii (nu-jazz) or the German "Jazzanova" which features 35 performers at once IIRC. As for most of Japanese music I guess you are already knowing that stuff by heart. If you have not been too much into game soundtracks and like to listen to chipsound & game techno stuff, I would deeply recommend something by Toaplan (Outzone, Tatsujin-ou, VV, Batsugun), Konami (the like), Cave (esp. Ketsui, DDP DOJ, Ibara, Pink Sweets, Guwange, Espgaluda), Irem and, of course, ZUNTATA (Darius, Layer Section, Ninja Warriors).
Here are some bands that arn't too popular and you may not have heard of but definately worth checking out. Some downtempo/relaxing/jazzy sounds of 'Mr.S' are excellent http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.S/_/RooM23 Ex-Nine Inch Nails keyboardist's band ' Modwheelmood' is nice and a bit different http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Taxwxlq5DvU&feature=related A bit of the unusual metal/experimental with 'Enter Shikari 'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA7ty0Cfw8s Straight up metal/hardcore from 'Hands of Hate' http://www.myspace.com/handsofhate 'Black Light Burns' from Wes Borland have a kind of Nine Inch Nails sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRmeRSgHn3w And finally 'Family Force 5' for that strange Mindless Self Indulgence/crunk sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N-NjP2HjR4
Recently been getting into Breaks after seeing these live: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yLjI0Dg21hU That tune is brilliant, so much energy.
I found a fan page for In Flames that has songs before their era of suck. "December Flower" is my favorite up here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=386634081 Cynic (who are about to release a new album after 15 years of hiatus): http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=86359638 Non-metal stuff: I found Slowdive a few months ago and have been getting into them more over the past week. I recommend "Machine Gun" (edit: didn't notice "So Tired" up there; give that a listen, too): http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=355544367 I really like Miles Davis: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=97873384 It would take me so long to go through every "genre" I listen to...
I'm actually listening to older stuff lately, like Joy Division / New Order, INXS, Depeche Mode,... Anyway, Oasis, Artic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, R.E.M.,... are always on my playlist. PS: Anyone who likes music should read High Fidelity. The movie is very cool as well.
My favourite bands and the ones I always hear once in a while: Exodus Dream Theater Destruction Manowar Testament Joe Satriani Blind Guardian Amon Amarth Now, if you're looking for not so common stuff here are my recommendations: Derek Sherinian: Former Dream Theater keyboardist (in my opinion his solo work is way better than what he did with Dream Theater), the genre he plays is mostly Metal Fusion but his albums go through lots of different styles, from heavy to acoustic. Also he brings awesome guests for the records (like Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci...). Jordan Rudess: Awesome keyboard player, his records "Feeding the Wheel" and "Rhythm Of Time" are just awesome. He goes from Prog Rock to Classic Piano and his style is unique. In the albums you can find guests like Joe Satriani, Steve Morse or Rod Morgenstein. Panzerballett: Now if you wanna hear something extremely rare this is what you have to get. It's hard to find but it worths it. Is a Jazz Fusion german band which makes his own songs as well as the strangest covers you could ever find...

MUSE!!!!!! Amazing band, one of the best live shows in existance. other than that try out Scars on Broadway or Mushroomhead.
Gary Numan (and Tubeway army) anything upto and including the Warriors album. Namely the Replicas, Telekon & I, Assassin albums. David Bowie - Low, Heroes, Station to Station, Young Americans & Scary Monsters albums Prince - sign of the times, purple rain & controversy albums.
QFT. Mushroomhead has been crap ever since Jmann left. Superbuick and M3 are still amazing, though. XIII wasnt THAT bad ( although nowhere near as good as their first 3 albums.).
AFI - all their albums are good but i like The Art of Drowning as well as December underground. HIM - they are one of my favorite bands and they have done excellent covers of Wicked game, Don't Fear The Reaper, Solitary man and a good few live versions of Rebel yell along with all their own song which are good. The Streets - Original pirate material and A grand don't come for free are excellent albums.
