well my bro was in airforce in okinawai japan
he went to this called okininawai garage sales(something like that) and bought a 60gb backword compatibility ps3 off a marine guy, im wondering since he bought in japan will it run japanese ps2 games?

 

Since it's a Japanese PS3 with backward compatibility... NO, it will NOT run Japanese PS2 games. It will only work with 3DO-Games from Bangladesh!

 

Im pretty sure the PS3 is region free. Like only 1 game isn't.

 

Region free for PS3 games. Region locking for PS2 games is still there.

If it's a Japanese PS3 with backword compatibility it will run Japanese PS2 games. Though make sure it's a japanese machine, since it's from a (us?) marine, it may be a us machine.

Region Locked for PS2 Games, Region locked for Disc based PS1 games (PSN PS1 games are not region locked).

Luckily BR changed the regions from what was standard for DVD. USA & Japan share the same BR region for films. =D

 

Thankfully no game released to this date has region lock. :dance:

 

I have the same PS3 as your bro. a CHECHA00 unit.

Just remember when playing PS2 games, some lag is introduced. PS1 games also have lag but a bit less

make sure it's actually a Japanese machine, if he got it on base at the BX or PX he might have a US machine.

over 200 JP PS2 titles are Official "freeze or blackout" on 20/60GB Japanese PS3.
ex, Gran Turismo 4/ Minna no Golf 3 and 4/ Ace Combat 5/ Devil May Cry/ Tekken 5 etc...

if you have a friend speak Japanese, I recommend comfirm compatibility status of JP PS2 games you want to play.

Wait, so PS3 games CAN be region locked?

For some reason I always had a hunch that Cave released their shooters on 360 simply because they could keep them from the west or something. Now I don't understand why at all - releasing a very JPN-style of game on a US-created console. Maybe it was just easy?
With a fear of a derail, I ask: anyone know why they did this?

 

To release a game region-free on the 360 you have to get it certified in all regions. There's a substantial cost associated with that, as you might imagine.

 

Did Japan ever get the Partial BC PS3 (ie the 80GB unit)?
I know that's an official sony site but I haven't heard of any compatibility issues with the launch units for japan (hell I my self run a USA launch unit). But with regards to the 80GB unit there are a sizable number of games that are not compatible due to the CPU emulation (80GB units have a HW GS but software EE) and sony has a site up to list what's compatible and what's not.

 

60GB(CECHA, GS+EE), 20GB(CECHB, GS+EE) sold for launch to autumun of 2007 in Japan,
changed to 40GB(CECHH motherboard) in Nov, 2007. it was removed GS and EE both of them at once.
never sold GS + Software-emulation PS3 in Japan/ HongKong/ Taiwan.

one of serious issue of early PS3 in Japan, but Sony did nothing for.

i forgot to update this post, anybody got any duplicate japan ps1 games they have it can be without a case don't matter, i don't have enough money to import ps1 games from japan
