Your friend needs to brush up on their grammar And probably prepare to be sued after saying something about the interview after signing an NDA....
Considering that Apple is involved in the development of standards like HTML5 and Thunderbolt, I'd say they have some extremely technically talented people working there. The retail business seems very cutthroat and high-turnover from my understanding, I'm not surprised at your friend's experience, even if it sounds a bit hammed up.
Maybe it is a job for engineers as Apple are now proud that their iPhone 7 has stereo speakers (in a shit position) and is finally water proof. Wow, big deal. My 2 year old xperia has stereo front facing speakers and is waterproof oh, and has a 20mpixle camera and headphone port. I don't get Apple fanboys at all.
DOS it really matter? Look through new Windows. Seize the freshest Apple on the tree. Play the vioLin-uxtremely well. Bee eS Diablo. It's all the same crap. Y'all is stars on the insides baybeh
there are only a few unattractive poeple i've seen there before. i'm sure it's a mix of image and minor skill
Geez @retro, you're on a typo rampage today! Fixed that up for you! While I do agree that stereotypes exist for a reason, Mac users come in all shapes and sizes! Just as their Windows and Linux brethren do also. United we something something! With all that's been said, your friend is probably better off not working there if those are the types he would have had to put up with. I've always said it's better to be less miserable than to be more miserable. At least I've always said that as of one sentence ago...
Ive done an apple interview too. I think its more fair to say that technical knowledge isnt whats going to get you the job. If you arent personable or able to draw peoples attention to you then its likely not the job for you. Even if you are applying for the genius bar they need people that are above the average level of social interaction. And I cant fault them for that. If I ran a company I'd want the people at the front end to be those that can leave a customer at least somewhat happy even when their 2000 facebook machine broke.
I worked for an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) for about 5 years as a technician (ACMT certification along with iOS and others) and I have talked to many reps from Apple. I can tell you that the 1st person people talk to when you call is to answer the simple questions or to pass you up the ladder. The Senior Advisors DO have a decent knowledge of products and can trouble shoot very well, but like all things, there are some who really shouldn't be talking to anyone. As far as in store employees, a friend of mine got hired along with a older man who only ever owned an iPod and knew nothing else. I feel their sales people are there just to point you in the right direction. While the Genius do have a decent knowledge of the machine, but will usually ask you to leave the machine to have a ACMT look at it.
A good friend of mine worked as a sales associate for an Apple store for a few years. Near the end he was getting fed up and told me there is a huge "Cult of Apple" there. They really don't do much special for their employees, their employee discounts are poor, and the whole time you're told that it's a privilege for you to be working at the almighty Apple store. That place nearly sucked the life out of him. Funny enough, he's one of the most technical guys I know! But he portrays quite an extroverted personality and can hook people in with his radio voice.
That 'old man' probably just had sales experience. You don't need to know anything about what you're selling, as long as you sell them. Most people who walk into apple stores are educated in the products before they buy them, or just buy them because of popularity. If you know too much, places won't hire you as you might likely down sell someone instead of upselling things they don't need.
BUUTT, BUT -- LOOK AT WHAT HE ACCOMPLISHED!!!! A friend of mine used that excuse when I said my image of him lowered even further after watching the film Jobs, what shocks me is that said friend I mentioned is a father and somehow saw all of Steve's actions to be perfectly excusable.
The only not-shitty things Jobs did before his passing were wishing for iProducts not to have an official stylus (whoops!) and for iPhones to never sacrifice essential features for the sake of slimmer formfactor (double whoops!).
Oh yea, I agree. Having talked to sales reps in the past when I would go into a store, many of them just point you "to the hard drives", but don't have any technical knowledge of products. I think that's why Apple's return policy is very laxed.
Yeah was never a big fan of Apple. Its like they have this cult going and they only want people who fit in their profile to be attached to them.
i cant stand apple or their fan boy owners. another thing i cant stand is EVERY mobile phone shop you walk into, the FIRST thing they offer you is the latest iphone..why? .
