It all kinda depends on where you live, too. I live in Southern California and make next to nothing. When I think of being successful, I think of owning a house, supporting a family, having a savings account, no major debt, and the ability to take the occasional vacation. To do that where I live, you need to at LEAST be making $100k USD a year. It's very expensive to live here. The weather is beautiful year round, but it definitely comes at a cost.

I can't complain though. My little brother lived in Sydney, Australia for three years, and the cost of living over there is just crazy.

    ^^^^yes it is^^^^

We are set to be buying a new house soon, there goes close to $500k on nothing that special.

Minimum wages are fairly high here (i am not sure on the $ amount, so i won't make a goose of myself), but they have to be to survive. Also despite what the government here says they still like handing out money like free candy.

I live in Utah and for a while we had an influx of people selling there little houses in California that are worth like 300K to 500k and are nothing special. Moving here and buying like a 8 bedroom house for 300k and having money left over. So where you live definitely comes into it. Tons of jobs right now and decent infrastructure. (Getting Google Fiber soon!) But that comes at a cost as well. It's COLD here at least 3 months a year, and if you don't like Mormons or conservatives that is something to take into account.

Knowing where you want to be is helpful because then you can work towards what you want. If you just want a roof over your head and enough money to play on occasion. Then pretty much any job will do (depending on how hard you play of course). If you want to own your home and be able to support a family and play then chances are you are going to need some formal education of some sort (speaking of the USA at least) or both spouses will have to work. (One of my goals is to make enough so my spouse never has to work if she doesn't want to.) and if you want to go beyond that (break out of the middle class) I imagine you would have to start a business of some sort and go from there. I imagine the job searching topic (Advice, strategies, bitching, etc) could be it's own thread.

LOL, that made me laugh so much.

You may not consider yourself successful, but if you ask me bud you're doing bloody well. :)

Australia all round cost of living is stupid, shops are closing left and right. Hardly anything is Australian owned anymore which makes it harder for the people in the country to make money, a metal brush is being shafted in all families assholes at the moment. As much as I want my own family and house I just don't see it happening any time soon, if not ever. It's near impossible for my generation unless you deal drugs.

Well guess it's time to accept your fate and to stop complaining about things that you obviously can't change it. I mean obviously there is nothing you can do about it right?
