Here is a pic of my newly acquired New Astro City. I have wanted a candy cab for a long time and finally got the opportunity to purchase one.

Overall it is in good shape. There is some burn in, but it is barely noticeable when playing a game. I'm very impressed with the build quality of this cab. Everything is wired up nice, wire holders for everything and very easy dis assembly for monitor rotation, cleaning etc.

Viper Phase 1 borrowed from a friend, loud orange stools care of Ikea.

Very nice! There's one going in the UK on another website I visit and I am very tempted. Any chance you could take inside cabinet images to see how much space there is for various PCBs etc?

    P.S. LOUD stools!

This cab is great; having the true arcade experience can't be beat. Sure thing, I will take some pics and post them up. There is a decent amount of room, but you will not be able to hook up any larger boards like 4 slot Neo's if you use the supplied board and default mounting.

I will probably be removing the coin box housing (held in by a few screws), which will open up the whole right side of the cab. The only problem is figuring out how to mount the coin box door, it screws into the coin box housing.

Thx for all the positive comments.

    Pics

The default layout can support a board 19.75" x 14" x 5" high. I don't know the dimensions to the 4 slot, but have seen one in person. It will probably fit, but be real tight.

In the second pic you can see part of the coin box holder on the right side. The board holder and coin box holder are screwed down so their removal is very easy. I could then make a board that fits the bottom of the right side and be able to fit a larger PCB. I'm going to leave it as is for now, everything I currently own or borrowed fits fine.

I think I will fashion a long L bracket for the door. The door will still function and it will give me access if I need to do anything on the right side of the cab.

Haha, that stool comment was too funny. Do you mean the PCB panel? I saw a Neo Candy recently, would be sweet to also own one of those cabs. :icon_bigg

Excellent! Oodles of space for the sorts of boards I was considering!

Righty O, I think Santa will be stuffing an Astro Cab down my chimney this Christmas (if I can raise the cash!)

Lovely piece of kit. I currently use the MINI Naomi in my kitchen, this unit would be even smaller!

Same as a 2 slot - the 2 slot just has 2 slots 'covered'.

Oh sorry, should have been more specific. No, the control panel. You have 3 buttons - fine for standard JAMMA but not Neo Geo or 6 button layouts. You often see a 7 button layout to cater for both, even.

I can’t say enough about this cab. I have only owned one but seen a few in person and this is the best all around cab I think you can own. I saw your thread on that MINI Naomi, very cool cabinet. :icon_bigg

Another big plus is parts are readily available and you can use almost any panel on this cab.

Yeah, right now I have only Jamma 1-3 button games, no MVS or SF that needs the extra buttons.

I will be ordering a new 2L12B panel which I will just need to remap the 4th button when using MVS. I don’t mind this layout due to the Japanese style of button placement on the Astro panel. I might also try and add a 4th button to the old panel.

That's cool - the Seimitsu panels are pretty good - for the amount they save you on a genuine Sega, they're well worth the money! You might possibly be able to add a seventh button, but it'd be a bit of a squeeze.

Sega cabs can be a bit of a squeeze for larger boards without playing around. The better cabs are of course the Neo 29 and Super Neo 29 for large boards. You could also look at the Egret II or III, Atomiswave or a later model Jaleco Pony.

That said, my friend has an LS Sound cabinet, basically a cheap copy with a Neo style. It has an excellent feature - the PCB mounting board is plastic and slides out on rails. You might be able to get replacement mounts, thus leaving your boards on mounts for easy replacement. That said, the cabinets with wooden mounts that slide could be used similarly.

I have seen both Sega and Seimitsu panels in person and they both look good. Yeah that is true, the Neo’s do have much more room for larger PCB's. They only drawback is they are usually hundreds more then the NAC and Cyberlead's when you can find them for sale.

I would love to get an Egret II/III or Atomiswave, but the price has kept me from being able to purchase one. The Jaleco is also a nice cab, but parts are harder to come by for them.

I'm thinking of making an adjustable clamp system that grabs the edge of the PCB. I don’t mind taking out the board, but having to screw down each board is tedious.

I have yet to see one of the LS Sound cabs. Is that a UK/Europe only model?

Sorry for my late reply to this - forgot to check this thread!

LS Sound cabinets are I think Korean, something like that anyway. There used to be a website on them... I'll see if I can find it.

Here's my friend's in the meantime:

    Aha! Look what I found!

    LS Sound 29" 15kHz

    LS Sound 29" 31kHz

Click on the pic with the front open. I don't know if you can see it well, but that grey plastic tray has the board attached, and slides out on rails.

Cool, thx for posting that info retro! Those LS Sound cabs are nice.

I will be installing my new panel and the coin box door fix soon. Pics to follow!

    No worries!

Yeah, it plays really nicely. I think my friend's is the 25 inch. I'm not sure what make the sticks and buttons are, though. Never really had a close look... other than wiring it for SF2, as you can see!

Sounds good! Let us know how the panel is.

Looking forward to seeing the final product ;-) What PCBs do you have for it?

Right now I have been playing the borrowed Viper board. I have an ST-V board and a Taito F3 but haven't yet switched back to horizontal to play them.

My current wants are my own Viper board, Raiden DX, In The Hunt and a Neo 2 or 4 slot.

I have a Sky Shark coming in the mail, so that should be good times. I have never played the arcade version, just the crappy NES port. :-(
