Dreamcast does not have a perfect compatible setup. That karaoke module needs composite (if you're a completionist who must own one). While a few games either lack RGB or VGA support.
We had a tinitron monitor that died on us But while it worked it was the crispest thing we had. Composite is just BLECH anyway But for about 20 years I have been using Composite or better so asking me to use RF is like making me wear diapers and learn to walk again. That said the reason reason I hate them is the wire clutter, the back of my TV looks like a vine covered forest.
OH COME ON you prople are snobby about RGB and shit. that's also the 2nd time today somebody used that obnoxious image on me
The first system I had that hadn't RF was the Xbox, before then I've had a Mega Drive, Saturn, Game Cube and Dreamcast all with RF... Switching to composite was like a fucking miracle on my eyes (and my ears, if you take into consideration the stereo sound) and nowdays I can't barely make a difference between RGB and composite, except on really old systems, like SNES or Mega Drive.
RF is fine TV and nothing else. RF is shit for computer graphics. I still remember that in Castlevania SotN the Ice Specter/Witches would scream when you kill them and cause the modulated video signal to get all fucked up for a little bit. Composite in my opinion is the bare minimum signal to use and should only be used when there is no other choice.
You do notice the increase in colours from RF to RCA, and also S-Video. Look a lot richer, but then again it depends on the TV as well. I'm going try a few S-Video cables out on my HDTV.
Mega Drive upwards were all in scart RGB then came my move to Japan when I had to downgrade to Composite. Shit, that looked much worse to me. Finally I got a TV with S-Video. While it wasn't RGB quality, it was a hell of a lot better than composite. Now-a-days it's all component or HDMI and RGB or S-video but NEVER Composite and RF? It's not even an option these days, is it? Yakumo
The Vizio HD LCD we have has composite in but when I tried to plug one of my Dreamcasts in nothing was showing and I didn't get to try the S-Video due to the awkward placement of the ports on the back of the set. Some day I'll get another Tinitron monitor and plug all my Sega Hardware into that through VGA or RGB.
I ran my Playstation and Dreamcast via RF for years (because here in the UK that's what they shipped with and I didn't know any better). Loved them then, still love them now, regardless of how shiny the pixels and polys look.
If you're running a CRT no bigger than 19" then RF is acceptable in my book, if you're running an HDTV above 19" then it's totally unacceptable. I was running my Saturn on an unofficial SCART for a while which outputs fuzzy colour and it drove me to insanity until I got the official RGB SCART going again which looks perfect. Same with my Dreamcast, I just got hold of an official RGB cable for that since the unofficial one was crap. RF on an HDTV would look so bad it would make me cry and vomit at the same time, and we all know cleaning tears and vomit off your gamepad every 30 seconds puts a downer on the game experience somewhat and may also cause your equipment to malfunction. The level of interference in a modern household is astounding in itself.
