So I finally decided to bite the bullet before the new cheaper emu-station 3 units hit the states.

I initially went to a store and bought a 60gb and then realized that
    1. I would pay $42 in taxes for a local purchase
    2. I don't need wifi or memory card readers.

So I tried to find an online retailer after a fruitless search locally
    for a 20gb system.

Sony doesn't even have it on their site.. hmm. (not available)

I found it on buy.com and used coupon
    http://www.momsview.com/cgi-bin/to.cgi?l=buycoupon1
    and got $10 off.

    No tax either. So for $489 I got a 20gb ps2, saving
$152 in taxes and unwanted features.

So for $89 more than my 360 I finally got a ps3, which is not too
    bad!

As for the games, the prices still suck, but I plan to rent.

The codes still work so get those 20gb units while you can!
No way I am using a software emu ps3 , you just know after 6 months the support will die and you'll be stuck with a machine that won't play psone or ps2.

That's why I'm thinking of importing.. the only problem I can see for me is that my PSX games are PAL.. luckly I don't own any PS2 games as of yet.. so atleast that wont affect me. I hope they find a way to make atleast the bc part region free so I can pack away my old PSX.

tempting... that would be 370 euros + shipping instead of 499 or 599...
I would import one, but i like my PSX and PS2 pal games... and i would have problems with euro bluerays and dvds... do you think they'll ever make boot discs for sale for unlocking the region?

by the way, you sound better now... how are you now? i wish you left behind your problems.

I'm in the eye of the storm. I am waiting on results of some ct scans.

I fear that the new cheaper ps3 will be a real pos.

I bet they strip it down to ethernet, dvi , av out and power.
    Probably two usb ports.

The rest will probably be cut away.I bet they are striving for a $299 ps3 right now as we speak.

Sadly I can´t afford the PS3 yet, so there will probably be some years from now, before I can get the old "cool"("original") PS3 with the PS2 hardware inside. Kevin, you can always put a bigger MF of a HD in the PS3.

Better then my experience. I was saving up for a PS3, and then that "Trade in a PS2 for a $100 off a PS3" deal at Gamestop. God damn, that was a ripoff. First, they wanted a Composite cable (Understandable, although I brought a AV cable with me). Then, they wanted a SECOND controller (That was bullshit in itself, since the ad was very misleading and used singular instead of plural when talking about the controler). Finally, they wanted BOTH to be Sony brand controllers, which was a ripoff in itself.

Granted, I was being a jackass about it and bought a Sony brand controller and a Composite cable at the store (Since I wasn't about to drive 30 minutes back just to get a single controller). Price was still outrageous (About $480 or something). I still feel bad about it, since the people at the front counter were being nice about it and they stated that it was a ripoff in itself (Granted, I was ignornant and stupid about it).

I'm not sure how Italy works, but the UK customs people would almost definitely sting you, even if it is marked up as a gift.

a 300$ ps3? that's like a Beetle-sized mercedes ..ehr, i hate it when you get stripped down versions of things.

And here I sit and mock at Sony, for their comments on "market confusion caused by having a core and a premium system" regardin the 360.

Taucias, I ve gotten away with tax quite a few times. It is the written value on the box that they pay attention to, not if it's a gift or not.

Not any more. I know a few people that have had things delivered to them as gifts with values marked at 20 GBP or less but still had their packages opened and VAT bills sent to them. I don't know the underlying process that identified those packages, but they were.

It's probably luck of the draw.

Just a question, but do you guys really use the Backwards compatibility? I mean with my PS2, I rarely if ever used PS1 games with it. Part of it was because I have certain games that won't work on the PS2 (MK Trilogy for one). Also the nice PSOne I had bought and modded not that long before the PS2 came along was perfectly good and small. For me backwards compatibility in the PS3 is pretty much useless. The only time I'd use it is if I don't have enough space to hookup the PS1 or PS2, and that won't happen. I'll just have a bigger mess.

I dont really care that much about BC in PS3 since the PS2 is going to be here for a long time, just like the PSone did. So basically, I can get a new PS2 anytime...

What I'm worried about is the Xbox since the smartasses at MS decided to stop production entirely, and now you cant find a new Xbox anywhere.

That coupled with the lack of future BC support in the X360 makes me wonder why the hell I didnt get an Xbox before...

CAT scans? man I hope it is nothing serious...

Hell, right now, its the main reason I am even using my PS3 (Since I sold my PS2). Ever since I got a memory card adapter for it, I have been able to transfer all my saves over to it. Only negative part about it is the virtual memory cards, which can be a pain in the ass sometimes if you forget to change it.

I got mine for emulators and Ninja Gaiden. =) Glad I did too. It's also a great media center for playing discs loaded with AVI files and such.

Jason, you probably are part of a majority actually. I think most people do ditch their old system and buy the next one. I don't though. One reason I don't ditch older systems for their big brother that's BC is because exploits no longer work. ;) Can't run my eye-patch ar matey PS2 discs in a PS3. More importantly, PS3 can't use HDLoader which I LOVE because of the load times being so much smaller and how I don't even have to mess with discs.

Wow thanks for helping me forget the fact that I may never get a brand new Xbox:katamari:

And to think I dropped 2000 bucks on a gaming PC just to play HW2 properly...

Shadowlayer, I have one up for sale, had made a thread about it too, but it's PAL.

It's brand new, not even opened.

I m sure you can find brand new XBOXs if u look hard enough, for the right price!
