I've got 3 kids, 2 of whom are girls and have kind of done a bit of gaming. The eldest when it suits her mood (she rattled through Spyro when she was younger and has finished all the current Harry Potter titles on PSx and GC). The youngest girl merely pays a fleeting attention to more girly titles. This morning Diddydonn's parcel arrived containing replacement Saturn pads. Well, I have to say it's the first time he's gone retro and I dug out a few Saturn titles (Manx TT, Sega Rally etc) that I thought he might like. The Saturn has actually been sat up in the attic completely forgotten about - I had actually forgotten it was there as it belonged to my wife, not me. As I type, he is currently sat on his bum (for the first time in days) and lapping it up! He's only 4, yet he's doing ok actually! I've seen him use the 360 and the PS3 a few times, but it's not the same. The mark of a true gamer is a retro gamer.... and he appears to love it! Might post a pic sometime (face blooped out of course).
Nes/Snes if you ask me, you can`t go wrong with Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country. I have got a lot of love for the 32bit machines though.
Get him a PC Engine when he's a bit more advanced ^^ You ought to become the "Game-Teacher" every single one of us wanted to have in his childhood
2d games with great gameplay are definitely going to stand the test of time. You need a good fill of retro platformers to sink your teeth into when you`re young! Although i started on an old Pong system and an Atari 2600, I would say i was RAISED on the Sega Master System. got it when i was about 5 (1988) and played that fucker to death! Shinobi, Wonderboy 1,2 & 3, R-type and Alex the Kidd.
Edit the title so I don't read it the first time as My son is gay. Make sure he never touches a Nintendo console or if he does then only in dribs and drabs and nothing newer then a Super Famicom or he'll turn into a casual gamer. Sega machines are great machines for gamers, hook him on the Saturn and Megadrive and he'll be a gamer for life. As above, make sure he learns Japanese now as he'll be able to speak it fluently by the time he leaves school.
What can I say - lots of excellent advice there! I have a couple of large boxes with pretty all the consoles he could ever need, but I don't want to make the mistake of flooding the guy with everything and causing disinterest. There is such a thing as overkill imo - hence me putting most of my collection into storage. As he is actually not even 4, he really wants bright, colourful, fun games. I have been thinking things like "Crash Bandicoot", "Bomberman" was a great idea as the version I have is very colourful and great fun. A bit of "Atari" gaming with "Space Invaders" perhaps and things like "Sega Rally" on the Saturn. I tried him on "Sega Rally Championships" on the GC and he got bored...hell, I got bored watching him. That is one rubbish title! Other than that there are loads of "Mario" and the like. "Luigi's Mansion" etc. Not sure I want to encourage him to become a "Fanboy" of anything. My little nephew became a bit of a PS2 fanboy for a while and I had to ensure endless conversations about why I thought my Xbox was any good lol In the end I just gave him a repaired one, that was potentially what he wanted right from the off. Now he wants a 360, but he can buy that himself lol So, I think it's looking like a bit of Nintendo, couple with a bit of Sega and a smattering of Sony. Time to purchase another retail DC me thinks! ;-) Not quite time for the Xbox. Definately not a chance with the PS3 and 360 and/or ANY of the dev boxes!!
Funny you should say that - He thinks the "Sega" intro for Sonic is funny and walks around saying "Seeeeegggggaaaaaaa". Not sure what my own first words were, but because they pre-date the first home console it was not gaming related. I do hold the family title of being the first of all the grandchildren to swear at ALL of the grandparents however. A title I hold dearly and shall cherish now that they are gone! There is a good lesson in that for Jack Thompson, I was a little sh*t prior to any games developers taking my puny mind in their hands and shaping it into a lethal killer with the likes of "Duck Hunt".
Whenever my neice comes crawling around, she always goes for the GameCube controller. Loves it she does. Holds it well too. I've some pictures somewhere of me sitting on the floor playing with the PS2, and her sitting on my lap happily smashing on the GC controller. Should really find them.
