Beetle Adventure Racing is great, with very well designed and very atmospheric levels. A shame that there are only six, but I'd much prefer only six levels of this quality over sixty levels that are just 'OK'. The first level is great because it feels like it's set in the English country side (as the designers intended) and the motorway level is (in my admittedly not too expert opinion) a contender for the best racing level ever (well, out of the not too many racing games I've played!). The only level I'm not too keen on is the last one, not due to any problems with the designs of the roads, but because the who Halloween theme just makes it seem like a level designed for kids. I do have one very big disappointment though, and that's that the tracks can only be played the one way, so the six tracks only give you six tracks. What I mean is, in the Rush games, you can choose to race any track not only backwards, but also or instead you can choose to race any track mirrored. This is really fantastic, as it gives you four ways to race in each track (normal, mirrored (i.e. a left turn is now a right turn), reversed (so you and the other cars race around the track the wrong way), and mirrored + reversed), so the six tracks become sort of become twenty-six. Alright, so it's not as good as having twenty-four genuinely different tracks, but it's much better than only being able to race around them the normal way. And it would be fantastic if Beetle Adventure Racing allowed this. And I love the Burnout games, not only the fun in closely avoiding other cars to build up your amount of stored boost, but the crash modes are great too. I've only played Burnout 2, Burnout 3, the other one on the original XBox (can't remember what it's called) and I have one for the XBox 360 (Burnout Paradise?) but I've not tried it yet.
I love all the Rush games, the first two are good once you get used to the slightly strange physics. 2049 is one of my favourite arcade racers ever. The Dreamcast version is the one to have, if you have the option, it looks incredible through VGA.
This topic is for N64 games, don't derail.. Tracks couldn't be played in different directions because the tracks changed form on the last lap. Along with many of them having jumps which only work one way. It was very well thought out, the only issue was the rail AI. They wouldn't make mistakes, or go off the road ever it was a single line of AI. Although this was good though, it taught me to race neat on a track or a race. Majority wall ride, and ram other players, skilless twats The Bonus boxes is only what slowed the player down, and really that's the aim of the game in conjunction with placing first. One of three flower boxes for Wicked Woods was the hardest one to get, you need to be at the exact speed to reach it. The game is perfect for me though, I loved playing it as a kid and wasn't overly challenging but had a good sense of accomplishment when you finish it. Ohhh and nothing beats the Alien Beetle or HSV, that horn I'd install in my car if it wasn't illegal.
Though I don't have it my self the two Hot wheels games on the N64 are of high quality I've been told. Although many think it's been surpassed my Mario Kart 8 (I won't argue that fact, the demo I played in Target was tight) Mario Kart 64 is still to me the best pure Mario Kart.
I'd hardly call one three line paragraph derailing the topic. Someone else mentioned the Burnout series so I briefly mentioned the games too. I'm not saying that reversing the tracks would have been a quick and simple process. But it would have been possible with extra work (such as adding some jumps that were only possible on the reverse run of the track, to compensate for the jumps that were only possible on the normal run of the track), and would have greatly added to the fun of the game. By the way, how did the kart racers on the N64 compare to each other? The ones I know of are: Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Mickey's Speedway (the only N64 game by Rare that I don't have, I've never even seen it, was it even published in PAL format?), South Park 64, Lego Racers, I think that Diddy Kong Racing was better than MK64, at least in single player, but I'm not a huge kart-game fan so my opinion isn't exactly based on extensive play. What were the others like?
What do you guys think about Aero Gauge? I tried playing it at the beginning of this year and just couldn't get into. It seemed that my ship wasn't able to compete against the others. The AI was way faster than me. And after reading this thread I will try to buy Rush 2049 as fast as possible. I will try to buy it next month if I find a nice CIB copy.
The Xbox/PS2/GC version of 2049 on Midway Arcade Treasures 3 was the Dreamcast port and is my favorite to play just because of ease. I can't remember if they enhanced it or if it was a straight port. But with component cables it looks good, probably even better if you use the PS2 version on the PS3 w/ HDMI. Though of all the versions the N64 soundtrack is my favorite. Diddy Kong was great with the adventure mode, more fun as a kid than just selecting a track for a menu. You will be very happy you did, great now amazing at the time it came out. The DS one is great as well, pretty much Mario Kart 64 2 imo. Feels the same but with 3D models and some same tracks. Disliked paradise but try Dominator on the PS2 when you get some time. I actually disliked Crash mode in 3 but still beat it to 100% completion with all gold medals. Dominator though is 100% racing and the new mode makes the game even faster. Sorry back to N64, I could discuss Burnout all day haha.
I think the best racers are Mario kart, that star wars racing game is pretty good and Diddy Kong is my ish, Diddy Kong has so many awesome features for the N64. You can race in a car, race on boat and race in a plane. Get diddy kong racing if you don't have it. Don't get me started on F-zero. Fast paced awesome racing game!!!!
I own Hot Wheels Turbo Racing. It is a lot of fun. Good sense of speed, the jumps/tricks are huge and the game has some challenge. I should throw that one back in my N64. Also for my money there isn't a better MK game than Double Dash!!
Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero X for me too. How original, huh? Such a shame we never saw Expansion Kit of F-Zero X for Virtual Console. Few years ago I had the luck to play on an actual Nintendo 64 DD that a friend of mine had (I don't know if he still have it or sold it).
That rainbow road music! Also here are two examples of the N64 RUSH 2049 soundtrack that I think are better than anything on the DC version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03BZsMk1ox4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWn2L4DQ_zQ
Thanks for that, I've never heard of it before, but I'll try to track it down (probably via ebay, as anything older than 360 or PS3 is difficult to find around here, sadly). I really like Midnight Club 3 on the original XBox (and I think I liked MC1 (PS2) and MC2 (original XBox) too, but it's been ages since I played them) - even just the free roam was fun, whether exploring, or driving around the roads on the wrong side and trying at the last moment to avoid death. I was disappointed that F-Zero GX didn't come with a track editor (it was a great sequel in most other ways, though), but thankfully there is a (Windows PC) editor available, though of course to play the tracks that you make you'll need either a flash cartridge (I recommend the brilliant Everdrive 64), or an emulator. For details, see: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/434/ All of the 64DD games have now been dumped (http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=2610.0), so hopefully either (or both) someone will get them running on a real N64 without needing the 64DD hardware, or N64 emulators will start to support the games.
Don't know about the PS2 version, but saving is broken on the XBOX Arcade Treasures 3 port of Rush 2049.
Well Roadsters (at least the DC version) has jumps that only work one way, and it has reversed courses too. I have a Wii U on the way from eBay and it's on my short list of games to get. I might get Smash before, it's coming from Amazon. If you're in the States, Amazon isn't half bad, and the sellers have pretty competitive prices. I don't know much about the DD, but couldn't the games theoretically be loaded straight from an Everdrive (or other flash cart)? I mean I think the DD was pretty much just for loading the games, and didn't add any processing power or anything.
Well, Saturnu (the bloke who programmed the Everdrive 64's alternative operating system (to add things like box art view on the game select menu), so he presumably knows a thing or two about the N64 and ED64) said on the official N64 forum at http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=2610.msg26933#msg26933 It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Have a look at Simcity 64: http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=2610.msg26933#msg26933 and go to 1:50. For the time (pre-2000, the PS2 wasn't even out then) the 2D street view must have been fantastic! If only it was in English, and could run on an N64 without a 64DD (as long as you used a flash cartridge, I mean) then I'd love to try this. Why did Simcity 3, 4, etc not have such a street view mode?
I just tried mine and it works? Created a profile, did a race, exited the game, went back in and there was my profile and race stats.
Mechagouki, you weren't trying to save on a 360, by chance? The Xbox emulation on the 360 is...iffy, on a lot of games.
