Am now the proud owner of a PAL N64, works a treat but as first time having one got just a question or two

    1. When you turn the console on with no Game present should it boot up, i thought you would get a similar thing like you get on PS1, PS2 & GC. where you can look at your saves ?

    2. Which games would you recommend at the moment i have
    • Super Mario 64
    • Goldeneye
    • Banjo Kazooie
    • Quake

You won't get anything on the screen without a game plugged in. You'll have to manage saves with the game itself.

Mario Kart 64, DOOM 64, Perfect Dark, Blast Corps, Zelda: OoT, Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros., Mario Party 2, 1080 Snowboarding, Wave Race 64 and Pilotwings 64 are all considered solid titles. Some of those can be a bit pricey, though. First Party Nintendo software has inflated resale value.

I really liked Extreme-G and Extreme-G 2 although those definitely aren't considered classics. Picked them up for $1 a piece at an Exchange. Cruis'n USA is a lot of fun but it's nowhere near the arcade version. NFL Blitz for the N64 holds fond memories.

Perfect recommendations from @MBMM , if I were to add a few, I'd add:
    • Zelda Majora's Mask
    • Beetle Adventure Racing
    • Diddy Kong Racing
    • Jet Force Gemini
    • Pokemon Snap
    • Pokemon Stadium
    • Mario Tennis 64
    • Conker's Bad Fur Day
Make sure you get the Expansion Pak for Perfect Dark, it makes a huge difference.

I don't think you can even play the Single Player Campaign in Perfect Dark without having the Expansion Pak installed. You're limited to some basic like multiplayer game function I think.

Yep, that's right, you can only play the challenges, and if I recall correctly, limited multiplayer.

Be wary of Mario Party 1. The analog stick rotation minigames are cruel...

    F-Zero X
    Mario Golf
    Mario Party 3
    Paper Mario
    Pokemon Puzzle League
    Tetrisphere
Snowboard Kids 2 (very expensive PAL, it's an Australian release)

Wrestling is a particular highlight of the N64. Wrestlemania 2000 has a more humorous roster, who can't love names like Gangrel or Blue Meanie? No Mercy improved the graphics/gameplay at the price of bugs (some copies erase save data) and framerate issues.
Honorable mention goes to AKI's other efforts. Among the host of bland to miserable 3D WCW games, WCW/NWO Revenge stood out on top. Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 shows off a different side of the engine by embracing Japan.

Rush 2: Used to play the crap out of this game, I remember pulling an all nighter with a friend playing the stunt mode in this game, and..
Top Gear Overdrive: The upgrade system is addictive, especially playing 2 player with a friend. Also, who the hell doesn't want to race in a taco?
Mystical Kinja: An quirky adventure that makes me actually laugh out loud when playing. It's not perfect, but it's definitely an entertaining playthrough.
Mischief Makers: One of the few 2D games on the n64. It's kind of one of those cult classics, so you'll either love it or hate it. It's a game by Treasure, so if you like their games you'll find this one entertaining.

Otherwise the others have listed the other ones I was thinking of.

Can't believe noone's mentioned Bomberman 64 yet...? Shadows of the Empire is good fun too, but you could get it on PC instead if you want. Speaking of which, there's also a bunch of others like Rogue Squadron or Pod Racer which are usually considered worth owning, but I kinda skipped over them so can't confirm or deny that, and I think there's PC versions of all those too.

Also add a Memory Pak Controller Pak (for older games that didn't come with SRAM) and a Rumble Pak to your shopping list. (there's cards that combine both into a single unit, but with non-Nintendo stuff the rumble may be a bit weak - your call.)
Re: Controller Pak, most games only let you manage their own respective saves but some can be kicked into a "generic" mode so you can do some housekeeping. Iirc Turok's one of them.

    Crusin USA and World:
Actually it's better than the arcade as there's customization, and upgrades. Arcade version does not.

Other than the ones already mentioned:

    Kirby 64
    Killer Instinct Gold
    World Driver Championship
    Yoshi's Story

Not everyone likes Yoshi's Story, but personally I really like it, mainly because of its visual style. World Driver Championship is not a very well known game, but it's notable for having pretty impressive graphics for an N64 game. Supposedly it's one of the games with the highest polygon counts on the N64.

Roadsters looks way better than WDC. WDC is extremely boring.

Took me a while to remember that! I've had my periods of inactivity, but I am always lurking in the shadows keeping tabs on what's going on :p

I'd say the same might go for the mini games in Pokemon Stadium, the Sandshrew mini game totally busted my shoulder buttons.

+1 , loads of fun with some of these.

I'd strongly recommend Kirby 64 and Yoshi's Story, both great games.

I thought World had customization and USA did not. I can fire up USA to check but I remember there just being the 4 cars, the 3 bonus cars you can get by holding down the 3 C buttons and when you finish the main part the car you picked is a bit faster.
Yoshi's Story is a fun little game, it's just way too short. The music is great, though.

Yep those are the upgraded cars, and you couldn't select the cop, jeep or school bus on the arcade afaik.

F-Zero X! Looks as good today as it did 19 (wow, feel old now) years ago - since it looked pretty basic back in 1998. Only N64 title to run at locked 60 FPS iirc.

No, but it wasn't exactly common. Smash Bros comes to mind though.

The N64 is great (my favourite console), but it does have a few idiosyncrasies you'll have to get used to. To begin with, you need a game cartridge in the console, or you'll get nothing on the screen. Some games save to their own cartridge (such as the Nintendo, or Rare games), whilst others need a memory pak (also known as a controller pak) plugged into the joypad, to save. The N64 doesn't have a built in menu where you can look at game-saves on your memory pak, instead most games that save to memory paks have such a menu built in, usually accessed by holding down START when the console boots that particular game up.

You'll need an expansion pak (not to be confused with a controller pak, which is for game saves) really - an expansion pak doubles he N64's RAM to 8MB, and is only really needed for the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Donkey Kong 64, but is really all but essential for Perfect Dark too. Plus lots of other games take advantage of it too.

To be honest, I'd also suggest buying an Everdrive 64 too. This is a flash cartridge that lets you play rom files as though they're real cartridges, meaning that you can put all of the N64's games on one SD card inside the Everdrive 64, and not have to keep a large collection of cartridges by your N64.

Also, using an Everdrive 64 allows you to:

    - Play all region of games (a few of the N64's best games were Japanese only),

    - Play all of the hacked roms* (some games, such a Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, F-Zero X, etc, have been altered by fans to include new levels), all of the translated-by-fans-into-English roms,

    - Play the 64DD games (the 64DD was a rare disk-drive addon, with about a dozen games released for it),

    - Play the Aleck64 arcade games,

    - Play the prototypes and unreleased N64 games,

    - Use Gameshark cheats (the Everdrive can simulate the Gameshark),

    - Back up and restore your game saves from the SD card to your PC (since games that save to their own cartridge will instead save to the Evrdrive, since they are fooled into thinking that the Everdrive is a real game cartridge**),

    For more information, see:

    http://micro-64.com/features/everdrive64.shtml

    and

    http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?board=4.0

    https://krikzz.com/store/

It is fairly expensive, but well worth it, as it totally transforms the N64 experience. Plus it wil work out much cheaper than buying some of the rarer N64 games. There are other flash cartridges for the N64, but I don't know anything about them, or if they can do all of the things that the Everdrive 64 can do. but I really can't recommend the Everdrive 64 enough, as it's reliable, has lots of features, easy to use, and does everything I want of it with no problems or annoying flaws.

    * Some game hacks don't work on a real N64 (such as many Super Mario 64 hacks, and some Zelda hacks). This is down to the hacks themselves not being compatible with the real N64 (they were written and tested on inaccurate N64 emulators), so they won't work on a real N64 no matter what flash cartridge you use.

** Only games that save to their cartridge will save to the SD card. The games that need a controller pak to save will still need a controller pak to save to. Though you can back up and restore the games to/from the controller pak to the SD card, but you have to manually do that when you've exited the game, so for the game to save or load, you NEED a controller pak inserted).
