Hi guys, I recently bought an ntsc n64 and region free Ps1.

So when i play an ntsc ps1 game, the picture is slightly cut off on the right.

And when i play the n64, using my cable, the picture is very dim, its full rgb, but just very dim.

i am using a madcatz ps2/gcn/xbx rgb scart cable that i got from gamestation a good 10 years ago.

the picture is good for pal, and pal60 ps2/gcn games, i dont know why ntsc is always like this :/

any ideas what is wrong guys?

and my tv is fairly new, it supports many many hz, like over 100hz

The N64, are your cables wires for PAL or NTSC? It sounds like you've got the wrong region cable.

For the N64, it depends on how the RGB mod was done. Do you have any idea if the RGB signal is amplified?

Nintendo consoles do, yeah. If you use the wrong region cable the picture will either be too dark to bright.

Check out Retro Console Accessories on eBay.

    http://www.ebay.com/usr/retro_console_accessories

They make and sell RGB SCART cables and are located in the US. For some reason their stuff hasn't been up as much lately as it used to be, but I got my NTSC SNES RGB cable from them and it works great.

    Two possibilities:

    A) You are using a PAL SNES cable that has build in 75 Ohm resistors in the RGB lines which is wrong for NTSC consoles
    B) You are infact using a NTSC compatible cable but your RGB N64 doesn't have an internal Amplifier modification, in this case you need a special cable with build in amp.

I betting it's not amped, since he said the cable he's using is for GameCube. From what I understand GameCube scart cables are wired like NTSC SNES RGB cables would be (capacitors on the lines instead of resistors).

I live in the uk, if i can buy an Ntsc ps1/2 rgb scart, and an ntsc snes rgb scart, i will pay you for it, plus you ship it to uk etc. etc.
or if theres a way to make a pal ps1/2 rgb scart to work for ntsc signal..

Many PS1 games have ugly dithering which is very clear with RGB SCART. There is no such thing as NTSC/PAL SCART on PS afaik. But European and Japanese cables have different wiring. Cable for PS1/2 should have capacitors for correct brightness.

There's no such thing as an NTSC RGB SCART cable. Just rewire it properly.

If you're using a multi-cable, don't - they're terrible. Get a decent cable for each system, then modify them as necessary.

Pretty much. You'd never encounter one by chance.

That I can name, SNES kiosks have the only first-party RGB SCART cable distributed in North America.

the ps1 does support rgb though.
so if i bought a ps1 pal rgb scart, how would i make it ntsc compatible?

    same goes for snes/n64/gcn
how would this be possible, my knowledge is very limited, i just really want rgb on my ntsc ps1 ><

and on a side note what would be the best cable to use for ps1? s-vid composite rgb or what?

I played Crash Bandicoot 3 NTSC with SCART RGB (DIY), can't remember on PS1 or PS2 though.

Would this picture problem still be present with an s-video cable? or is it a scart exclusive problem??

Really? I believe you described yourself as a "videophile" in another thread. Surely you know that RGB is better than S-video, and far superior to composite.

As for "PAL/NTSC" Scart. The AV-out socket is identical on all PS1 models regardless of region. So just just buy a European cable for your PS1.

Also, when you use RGB, NTSC and PAL color encoding isn't a factor anymore. The colors are being fed directly to your TV using three separate wires, one for each color.

Then use RGB :) Anyone who would tell you that composite is better is either retarded or stuck in a nostalgic loop, trying to recall the "good old days" when they didn't know of RGB and had to use the bundled composite cable to hook their systems up to their TVs :)

About the off center RGB. There are devices that can shift the picture horizontally. You can build one yourself: http://playoffline.wordpress.com/cable/rgbshifter/ (german, sorry) or you could use one of the many Extron RGB interfaces that can be found dirt cheap on ebay nowadays. Note that using the Extrons is a bit more complicated than plug and play, and will require you to buy more than a handful cables, connectors and adapters. Furthermore they most likely won't work with regular composite sync, so a sync stripper of some sort will be needed.

Hopefully there are other, much simpler solutions to this problem that I don't know off.
