I've got an NS1 Nintendo 64, with an 04 board, that I'm trying to RGB mod (Pretty sure I've since killed this board, but what ev's)

So, I've build my RGB mod using several pieced together tutorials online.

This is what I've come up with.

    KxFGJUU.jpg

However, after this mod, I no longer have +5v coming out of C109.

Also, I seems to have blown a Power Supply now, I assume this is related.

    Anyone see anything wrong?

Not entirely sure what you mean, this is the second time I've modified this same console (I.E I've already rebuilt it)

If I dismantle the mod, and restore the console back to OEM settings, then +5v works (Composite video does not, but thats another issue I suppose)

    Couple of things I noticed:
    - You remove way to much insulation from the wires. This easily can lead to shorts.
    - Could it be that the underside of the little RGB Amp PCB touches some components on the mainboard? Maybe put some tape underneath it to be sure it doesn't.
    - You can get power and ground also from the multi out connector, maybe the bigger solder points suit you more.
    - the 104 cap seems to touch the legs of the THS chip

Seems you are a genius sir!

My ground pin on the cap was touching the closest pin of the THS chip.

So, I fixed the short, and plugged everything back in.

Composite and S-Video are now working again! however, RGB still does not work.

At this point, can I safely say the the internal RGB mod is successfully working? And focus on the SCART cable issues that I may have?

Long story short is that my TV will not detect a SCART or (EXT) signal and thus won't let me select the SCART input.

    Any ideas?

What scart cable did you purchase? Have a link?

See my other thread here: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=129633

It contains a link to the purchased product.

I then followed this, to convert it into an NTSC cable.

I've also confirmed that Pin 16 is getting +5v now.

Oh. That was me that replied over there. It could be what I said about your monitor wanting c-sync and not composite video sync. You might need a sync stripper.

I'm excessivly new to the who c-sync nonsence, in fact, never heard of it till you mentioned it in the previous thread.

I don't suppose you have any resources, threads, tutorials etc, that you may be able to send me.

    Also, on a side note:

With the RGB mod, is it necessary to lift the 3 pins of the VDC chip? Can I not in theory have an N64 output composite, S-Video and RGB?

    And it's not nonsense :)

You don't need to lift any pins. That is the purpose of the multi out connector. Just use the appropriate cable. You currently have all 3 available.

Ok, so I found this small tutorial to convert Comp - C-Sync. Will this work on my V04 motherboard? How will I know if I need a Sync Stripper? Can I do the mod below without a Stripper?

No. That only works on v03. They took some components out on the v04 board. There is some info on how to reuild it somewhere on this forum though I think. But doing what was done in that pic will cause your composite video cable to not work anymore as c-sync is now on the composite video pin of the multi out.

Would this be what I'm looking for? http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/downloads/retroaccess n64 csync.pdf

My TV is a Samsung as mentioned in this.

Yeah. That's it. It may be easier tough to wire up an lm1881 (sync stripper) in your scart cable.

Is the sync stripper instead of the Comp - C-Sync mod?

the schematic in that PDF is seriously confusing :S

    Short answer in one post:

NUS-CPU-03 is fine after you add the RGB lines in.

NUS-CPU-04 requires you either get sync from the s-video side of things, rewire your SCART connector to use composite video as sync (occasionally has issues with some displays), or rewire C-SYNC from the encoder (not recommended).

As APE says, you can use Luma (S-Video Sync - "S-Video side") as sync for RGB (Recommended) . If your using a Composite Video as sync SCART lead (regular SCART), you will need to either cut the trace leads to Pin 9 on the multi-out like shown in the diagram you've shown or lift pin 12 (Composite Pin) on the encoder IC labeled as "ENC-NUS" (Recommended) then link Pin 7 to Pin 9 . If you do the cutting the trace method, i recommend cutting closer to the resistor area as it can be easy to cut the nearby traces. Here is a little diagram to show you what i mean

If your using a composite sync (Raw sync) cable, all you need to do is Wire pin 7 to pin 3 and your good to go.

But will Luma work if his monitor will only accept c-sync (which may be the issue as composite video is not working)? This is why i suggested he add a sync stripper to the scart cable.
