Natto

Natto is a common japanese breakfast item, normally eaten with rice. I love the stuff and eat it everyday for breakfast (esp when it costs about 15 to 25 pence, 20 to 40 yen) a packet. With miso soup and various vegetables like carrots, daikon, leek, potato and sweet potato it is a healthy and tasty start to the day.

You can even have it as a main meal too, I do like natto spaghetti too.



So do you like, would eat it, hate, would like to try or would never try it in a trillion years?

Make sure you vote then. My gf thinks I am different as I happily eat a lot of common stock japanese foods over western foods. One of my favourite japanese foods is daifuku,

I want to try it just because I'm THAT much of a gaijin.

Is there an American equivalent to natto? I can't think of one.

 

I tried Natto a few times when I used to live with Japanese people, but I could never get adjusted to the texture and feeling of it in my mouth; the taste in itself wasn't even that bad I suppose.

The smell is terrible if you're not eating it though, I had to sit next to my little sister who eats natto everyday.. Not something I enjoy being confronted with in the morning.

 

Here's my definition of Natto and it's 100% true apart from point 4, maybe.

1. Looks like rabbit SHIT that someone has snotted in to or even worse, emptied their man milk in to it.
2. Smells like SHIT.
3. Just as messy as SHIT.
4 Taste like SHIT (or at least I think so).

I do like the dried natto nuts though. Good w/ a beer.

I love it!, but is nearly impossible to find here, maybe I'll ask the owner of the japanese restaurant near my home, where can I buy it.

Never had natto, though I'd love to try it. Is there an easy/cheap way of getting it in the UK?
