i think, everyone could add his own story of what nasty things nattô looks like, but even so, it still doesn't make it bad or uneatable. while i'm eating nattô, i don't have to close my eyes because it may could remembers my of rabbit and/or goat shit, semen or a slimey bogey etc!!!

Very little has been said in this thread as to what Natto actually is, and I think that influenced the poll.

It's rotting soybeans, held together by a rotting slime. Pure shit.

I eat just about anything recommended to me when in Japan - bowls of various animal guts, raw horse meat, whatever. Some of it is good.

But I will never eat natto.

maybe someone also will tell you, that nattô counts to the most healthy eatable things on our planet earth?

    Nattô FTW!

btw. i'm just eating my nattômaki while writting this post

Ditto, I am having a bowl of miso soup with daikon, carrots, potato and leek and a bowl of rice with some natto and I am enjoying it. :) Still the poll shows that most people do like it and would like to try it. :)

Well, most people wanna try most Japanese things although I'm sure that atleast half of those voters have no clue as to what nattou actually is. I'm planning on giving it another go sometime though, just not too soon:rolleyes: .

Yeah some people who have never set foot in Japan automatically think it's all sunshine and rainbows over here. Don't get me wrong, I love being in Japan but sometimes people need to realize it's just another country, it has all the ups and downs of any other place...it has faults, it isn't perfect...I always am amused and can tell the gaijin over here who just arrived or are on vacation, that innocent gleam in their eye LOL.

 too true. THey'll go around ordering all the Japanese food then have this disgusted look on their face after eating it as if they though the food would be the most tasty thing in the world.

Still need to meet you one day as you are only a 2 and an half hour bike ride from me, I still probably have that innocent gleam in the eye even if I have been living here for about 2 years on and off for the last 5 years. :) Although only having to do a few hours work a week does help. :)

I'm sure you'll agree that there is tasty Japanese food. I love tempura with a nice daikon and soy sauce dip. :) In fact I'll eat and enjoy most Japanese food that isn't meat.

Oh yes, there are many tasty things to eat in Japan such as Tempura. What I don't like is Miso and Shoyu. I hate those two things so as you can tell pretty much all of washoku is revolting to me.

I don't count food such as Yakitori or yakiniku Japanese as such since you can get very similar dishes all over the world. Still food such as Katsudon, takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, yakisoba, Gyudon with raw egg and so on (See a trend in those foods :110: ) are all fine examples of Japanese food. Oh and let's not forget their idea of curry. While it's fuck all like "real" curry it's still very tasty

Don't get me wrong Jamtex, I love it here like I said. I wouldn't be here if I didnt. But I'm sure you know as well as anyone how the REAL Japan is and not some fantasy land a lot of people think.

I like Japanese food as well, took me a bit to get into some but most I like. Still won't try tobiko or anything octopus or squid. I've had it before and just didn't care for it (squid and octo, and I just dont want to try tobiko) but otherwise most of it is great!

Except that moldable fish they have in some izakayas...wtf is that shit?

i can list up very fast, what i don't like. rather than what i like:

    ikura
    furikake
    umeboshi
lots of hormon yaki niku (e.g. shinzou, kanzou...)
    shirasu
    konyaku

of course there are some exotics which i probably never tried yet, and which probably also will fall in that same category. but in generally i can honestly say, that i like, or better said, i can eat 95% of the washoku kitchen without probs.

Lets translate it for the boys and girls...

I can agree with the awful offal. (pun intended....) but most of the other things are fine with me. I love umeboshi in Onigiri. :D

Tonight I am drinking Amazake that I made from Sake mash (that my gf gave me as her family make some nice sake), water and sugar. It's a tad alcoholic as I've not boiled all the alcohol away.

    it's acquired taste, yes.
unless you grew up with it you are more than likely not going to like it~ ^ ^
saying that it's one of my fav foods inc. such as fermented fish gut, salted fish row, feeled raw prawn~ However I couldn't swallow the raw baby octopus when I tried last time.. it's just too sticky for me to push down~ heh...

I don't really enjoy it. I tried it three times, each with a different dish and in differing amounts (hoping that maybe if I had smaller portions, then I would find it enjoyable), but I simply couldn't enjoy the taste. The texture and smell doesn't bother me, although it is sticky as hell. Do I hate it? No. Do I like it? No. But would I eat it if were offered to me? Likely not, but I don't hate it.

On one of my trips to Japan, a Japanese friend of mine made me go to a local restaraunt for Natto mixed with Chili. I threw up right there in the bathroom. If it wasn't for the chili, I would have thrown up at the table. Natto tastes like moldy "old people" socks.

    So, today was the day.

A new shop opened in Düsseldorf, which sells Onigiri, eating one with Natto right now. Not too bad!
