Hey guys, I came across this monitor on Yahoo Auctions and it immediately tickled my fancy. It's like a Japanified IBM 5151/5153/5154 monitor, super cool:

(wayback link for future reference: https://web.archive.org/web/20171116045407/https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n238246648)

It's hard to search for this connector because I don't know what it's actually called, some stuff I found referred to it as a "TV connector", but searching for that just brings up stock photos for RCA, BNC, etc.

Basically what I need to know about is the pinout for this port - I have a Toshiba Pasopia PA7010 computer and matching monitor, and the monitor uses this port so it's always been a curiosity of mine. I've seen photos of an NEC PC-8801 using this monitor, so assuming it accepts 15khz signals, it might be able to work with IBM compatible PCs with CGA or EGA cards right? If it is, making a cable to connect the two should be easy enough, I just need the pinout.

That's what I'd like to use it for (other than the proper National JR-200 computer that it was made for), and I can avoid all of the costs associated with shipping it all the way to Australia since I'm visiting Japan in early December, and can just bring it back with me (yes, that's kind of stupid, but I've done it with a monitor before and it survived well enough).

Are you talking about the greenish port? That looks like a EIAJ VTR connector. I know some professional end VTRs and PVMs had it. That's all I know about it. If any of my info is wrong, I'm sure the more knowledgeable people here will correct me and give you the correct answer assuming mine is wrong.

Yeah, that one. I thought I had seen it on a PVM before too, thanks for confirming it Joeh.

Oh cool, that should be very useful, thanks!

EDIT: I found the wiki page for that connector, looks like it's called "8-pin Digital" or just Digital RGB (ディジタルRGB, or デジタルRGB) gets you relevant Google results. It even has a pinout diagram. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/8ピン角型デジタル端子

It's possible that it runs at non-standard line and frame rates - that was very common with older Japanese computers because the standard resolutions supported by the early IBM color video adapters were too low to display nice looking kanji.

You could totally use it with any of those FM-7 type machines (FM-77, etc), I've found several pages mentioning that.

Too late now :p I won it last night. I was talking to a friend of mine who does a lot of stuff with 60's - 80's computers, and he thinks it should be fine as long as I match up the pin diagram from that wikipedia page with a CGA one. Even if it doesn't work with CGA stuff, I'll get a National JR-200 to go with it, which I was planning on getting at some point anyway because I thought it would compliment my growing early Japanese microcomputer collection.
