Also, vinyl will always sound better than CD if you have the right equipment. Probably not the best analogy, there! ;)

Don't confuse a crappy 14" bedroom TV with a 14" broadcast or computer (Commodore, Philips) monitor. They're excellent for gaming if you have limited space. I'd be looking out a CM8833 over an XRGB in a make-do limited space room any day. Your average 21" RGB SCART television is a pretty decent choice for the average gamer, but a PVM would be better.

14" is 14". It's still too small IMO. It doesn't matter what the quality of the screen is, I'd stil rather have a bigger screen than 14".

That gun is also a bit pointless if you want to use anything really retro from say the Spectrum light gun all the way up to the Dreamcast light gun. None of the official guns will work on a 100Htz CRT.

Sort of related; I got a new LCD TV about 2 months ago (my first non-CRT TV), and tried "Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal" on PS2 over component with it. The picture quality was a lot like this:

According to the TV it was outputing 480i, but strangely no other game I tried that ran at 480i had any distortion like that. Is there a proper name for that type of artifacting/distortion? I'd like to try and figure out why its only happening on that one game...

What about the TV featured in Game Center CX? I'd like to get my hands on a 4:3 LCD Tv.

The XBOX version of HotD III contains the full HotD II game as an unlockable and works fine (for me) on a 32" LCD with the Mad Catz XBOX gun.

Sometimes I'm wondering myself if I could replace my 50hz 29" JVC CRT tv for an other/better 28/29" model. Does anyone have knowledge or know sources of European 50Hz CRT tv's with pros and cons? What I find annoying of my JVC is that it doesn't have an audio output. I have to use SCART adapters with rca plugs for that. It does have front s-video and a comb filter, which I recall, together with the 29" size, weren't much models which had that back in ~2004 when I bought it.

That's a Samsung SD (standard definition) LCD TV, it won't display above 480p, which is why retro consoles look OK on it, I have a slightly different one in my gaming room, mainly for use with the SNES.

I find the Saturn produces a very good image on the bigger 720p widescreen Samsung on the wall, using s-video and stretching the picture to something like a 15:9 ratio. The N64 actually looks great on the big TV through composite and displayed in a bordered 4:3.

Nice display for your gaming setup, it neat and simple :)

Yes It good but I find Super Nintendo is abit better on my LCD TV. However It doen't feel enough for me. I think I will be start searching for a Sony PVM monitor right now.

    EDIT

My LCD TV resolution is 720p by the way. It not Standard definition unfortunately which I was hoping.

Thanks, it's a work in progress, but I'm getting close to what I want, still have to chose the 10th console, I'm thinking Genesis probably.

Are you sure your TV is 720p? I thought all 720p TVs were 16:9 ratio (1280 x 720).

Sony Trinitrons are good, i've also found Hitachi CRTs to be quality as well as JVC and should do both 50 and 60hz at least via RGB, if a tv has no s-video input, it can also be supported by scart

Wow, I'm curious about this! Which model N64 on which model tv exactly?
I have yet to see a N64 on a LCD tv that looks at least okay-ish...

15" is way too small for gaming, unless you're sitting only a few feet away from it. It's okay if you're using it like a PC monitor at a desk, but if you're sitting on a couch with the TV several feet away from you, I think that'd be pretty painful to use. Why not go for something a little bigger? TVs are pretty cheap these days. Old CRTs are even cheaper.

Usually not. Some PVMs have audio inputs (which you could connect to a headphone connector with an adapter) and a very small speaker, but I don't think you'd really want to use that speaker as they're generally pretty weak. It's better to use external speakers - even PC speakers are fine, if you have the right adapters/switches. It's even better if you have a proper amp/receiver setup. Speakers built into TVs almost universally suck. They've gotten slightly better over time, but they still suck in comparison to almost any dedicated speaker setup. This is especially true of PVMs.

And I doubt you ever will, unless it's using a Framemeister or something similar.

    Thank you for the advice.

Yes it was mainy use for desktop so I normally play few feet away from my LCD TV. Well I keeping my eyes on Sony 14 inch PVM (Model PVM-1442QM) but I can't say it has audio input. Hopefully someone who own this can tell me.

I know one of the SCARTs usually supports s-video, but one of my demands/wishes for my retro tv was a front connection :)
I talked with some (Dutch) people in the past from the industry. They usually mention Philips, Sony and B&O. Personally what I like about my Philips widescreen CRT is that it has 2 RGB SCARTs (and one also s-video) and so far it has taken all my signals I throw at it. Especially the N64 together with the Passport converter gets me black/white screen on my other tv's for some reason. And yes, they do support NTSC and everything (no issues with other consoles). It's also both for PAL games on NTSC N64 and NTSC games on PAL N64, but not every game ?_? (with RGB mod it's in color with composite/s-video)
But like I said, my Philips widescreen shows everything in full color :)
So that kinda gets me to the Philips direction. I've also heard some Philips CRT tv's which actually had very nice audio (built-in subwoofer). Doesn't matter that much since I have a receiver setup.

They weren't too positive about JVC though. And I don't know if that's common with 4:3 29" 50hz CRT tv's, but displaying game content in 4:3 mode results in black bars and then I have to use the zoom function, but then some image drops off screen left and right :/ Actually, that's with the Gamecube, not sure with the other consoles. Now I'm curious testing it ^_^

my JVC has 3 Scart sockets, 2 support rgb, a front s-video and av rca jacks and a headphone jack, i'm not sure what model it is as i cant get to the back of it at the min, i dont use s-video for anything though so its never a priority, still nice to have. i had a hitachi c28n a while back. loved it had great sound and was 4:3

Perhaps we should start a CRT topic ;) (or perhaps there is one already)
    Your JVC is 4:3 and 50/60Hz? I don't recall ever seeing a 4:3 CRT with 3 SCARTs!

sadly no it's a widescreen but it's 50/60hz, the sony trinitron is 4:3 and the hitachi i meantined was also 4:3, i've got another hitachi in the closet as a backup 32" beast but its widescreen and has no remote control(not major issue)

the JVC tv will do 4:3 stretched (eg fill the screen) 4:3 centered (black bars on each side) or 16:9.

the trinitron is from 1994, 25" model << i'd advise a trinitron they really are good. I was only convinced after getting one how nice they really are.
