hi members , i want to get a Solid State Drive early next year and i'm having trouble selecting what size i will need. I currently have a Samsung 3TB ( yes i know they suck ) which is my Windows 7 partition with software ( winrar , filezilla and many more apps ) is 196GB free of 345GB.

so yeah i'm thinking a 480GB SSD drive will be perfect but i'm not 100% on this. Also i was wondering if there is any easy to use software where i can copy over my current C:\ drive on to the SSD and make it my new C:\ drive , i don't want to re-install everything but if i have to i will.

any other tips welcome , i'm a noob with SSD's

    chat soon

You will need some drive cloning software.....for example Acronis true image or Paragon backup & recovery (free). this can image your current drive and image it back to your new ssd.

personally I've had really good experience with samsung drives & they are quick! i do have a kingston drive thats over 6 years that still going strong.

Get a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, that's what I did for my pc.

When I bought my Samsung SSD it came with a free cloning software (Samsung only most likely) which made it really easy to move all your stuff from the spinning drive onto the SSD (Windows included)

Thanks for starting this thread s8n.

I am planning on this too. I am looking at getting a ssd for my sons gaming pc. I also have a msata port on my motherboard so haven't decided on ssd or msata ssd. The msata definitely looks to be more expensive. Now there's m.2 sata ssd too but my pc doesn't have that port but I believe there's a m.2 adapter if someone wanted to go that route.

I got him a better graphics card, 1 tb harddrive for storage + his existing 1 tb, 32 gb ram upgrade from 16 gb's and still need the ssd hd.
This is the SSD I am looking at. As for cloning it any of the above mentioned software will work great. I plan on using this one since I have it already(EaseUS Partition Master 11.9)

Some SSD manufacturers have software that allow you to image your existing partition onto the SSD.

You might also want to check if your case has mountings for a SSD. If it does, then you do not need a 2.5-in to 2.5-in adaptor. SATA connections are the same for both 2.5-in and 3.5-in disks.

The Samsung migration tool was easy, you basically connect the ssd to your pc (usb or a spare sata port). Turn the pc on and load Windows as normal from the spinning drive. Run the program and it will migrate everything across to the new drive.
I ended up going with an EVO Pro as I liked the 10 year warranty (if you do less than 40GB of read/writes each day)
I'm sure the other manufacturers have a similar program to make it easy to transfer the OS and files, don't want to look like I praise Samsung too much here
