Here's an old tut using Windows XP. Depending on your OS, this might be slightly different.

You don't have to use FlashFXP, Filezilla works just as well.

Which app are you using? The FTP is an extremely simple process since it's local.

First off make sure you make the port 21 with your program (filezilla) is a good one.

username and password is xbox : xbox I believe (might be different)

Then you're in. If you can't get your laptop to communicate, make sure you don't have any firewalls on or antivirus programs blocking anything.

you need the IP address of the xbox not the laptop to connect from your laptop to the xbox

It should work with these two ip addresses. Connect to the xbox by typing 192.168.0.22 in your FTP client on your PC port should be 21 and L/PW is XBOX. If you want to troubleshoot your crossover cable and have a network switch/hub, you can use regular non-crossover network cables and connect both machines to the switch.

yes you should be fine with those however you dont necessarily have to set a static ip for your laptop but that depends on how your networks configured, load ftp program, input the ip address, port 21, username xbox, password xbox and you should login, if your getting nothing i would be tempted to check that your cables are not damaged or faulty in some way, windows 7 is not a problem i use it here and can connect to my xbox, however saying that make sure that your ftp program is allowed through your firewall

just remembered you could load xbmc up on the xbox and try to ftp into that rather than another dashboard, shouldnt make a difference but worth a try

Norton is a waste of processor cycles and ram. It will slow your system more than any "virus" will. Same goes for AVG or McAfee.
That said, forget FTP for a moment. Simply try pinging the xbox address to ensure you have a connection.

On Windows 7, press [Windows key] + [R key]. Type 'cmd'. Press enter. Now type 'ping 192.168.0.22' and hit enter. Tell us your results.
On earlier Windows, click Start > Run. Type 'cmd'. Press enter. Now type 'ping 192.168.0.22' and hit enter. Tell us your results.

This is an important diagnostic step that will help us help you.

And also, just to make sure, you did set the gateway and subnet mask on both machines right?

After changing settings you have to save them...

    Set your xbox as follows:
    IP 192.168.0.22
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.0.1

Now try to ping the xbox. I assure you, ping is a recognized command. All you have to type in the command prompt is:
    ping 192.168.0.22
    no quotes or anything else.

You will either get a ping time in milliseconds (good result) or "destination host unreachable" (bad result).
If you can't ping it, you'll never be able to FTP it.

I'm sorry, but can I ask you why you're calling your laptop a "lab top"?
Urban dictionary has nothing good to say about lab top.

On topic though, the way I FTP to my Xbox is over my network, not through a crossover cable. Plug your laptop into your local network over ethernet and make sure you have network access. Do the same to your Xbox and make sure it has a valid IP address. from there any simple FTP program should connect, as long as you have the right IP address for your XBox.

It would also help to specify (if you haven't already) what dash you're running- XBMC, EvolutionX, Xbox original, etc.
XBMC makes it really easy to FTP everything. REALLY EASY. I had 0 issues getting it running on the web, and FTP'ing files over- took me 5 seconds on my first try.
Plus it's a better alternative to the Xbox original dash anyways.

Another thing to make sure of- is it hacked/modded? I'm not 100% sure if it needs to be hacked but I don't think MS would purposely make it easier to hack.
Either a softmod or a hardmod will do.

I'd tell you my completed, working setup, but my setup is over Mac, so I can't help you too much.

Forgive me if I am dumbing this down too much. I know you are a smart person. I just want to address everything from the ground up.

So you've successfully softmodded your xbox, right? It is now running UnleashX (my favorite) or EvolutionX from the harddrive, right?
The reason I ask is because if you are running the dashboard from a CD, you won't be able to save configuration changes. So make sure the dashboard is running from the xbox and you can save the changes. I think you have to press A twice or something silly like that. The method to save changes varies between dashboards.

Once you have the xbox running from the harddrive, and have the xbox's network settings configured like I stated above, you will then be able to move onto the PC side of things.

Are you connecting the xbox to the network router? Or directly to your computer? Connecting it to the router will make networking a bit easier. If you are connecting directly to the PC do as follows:

On Windows 7, go to Start > Control Panel.
Near the top right it will say "View by: ..." set that to "small icons".
    Select "Network and Sharing Center"
Click "Change adapter settings" on the left
You will now see an object named "Local Area Connection". This is your ethernet port.
If the icon is grayed out, right-click it and select "enable"
Next, right-click it and choose properties
Highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)". Click properties.
Make it look like the picture below, then hit ok and close all open windows.
    help1.png

At this point, try pinging again. If you get a good ping, then you can FTP.
Once again, I apologize if I over-simplified things for you. I just suspect that your ethernet port may be disabled.

OK, firstly - it's laptop. Not lab top. One word, as in a computer that sits on top of your lap. LAPTOP. Please use the correct term.

Why are you using a crossover cable? It would be much simpler to just connect to your home router with a straight cable - then you have a DNS server giving you IP addresses.

The way you're doing it, you'll have to assign IP addresses to BOTH devices manually, and subnet mask.

Firstly, disconnect your laptop from your home network - disable your wireless. Set the IP address and subnet mask to a 192.168.0.x range, then do the same on the Xbox. Make sure the FTP server is running, put the Xbox IP into your FTP client along with the correct username and password and it will connect.

Doing it the other way would be much easier, though.

As you're connecting to the FTP server on the Xbox, NOT the laptop, firewalls and Norton have nothing to do with it.
