Here's an old tut I wrote from another forum.

I am using Windows XP for this tut, the process may vary on different versions of Windows.

    You will need:
    A modded Xbox
    FileZilla
    Ethernet crossover cable

    Configure your IP address

On the desktop, right click My Network Places/properties

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click the properties box. Check off obtain a IP address automatically.

Next, where it says IP address, enter:
    IP address:192.168.0.1
    Subnet mask:255.255.255.0
    Default gateway:192.168.0.1

    Click OK.

    FTP Settings:

    Download and install FileZilla.

Check your Xbox for the IP address, it's normally on the main screen depending on the skin you use.

Start FileZilla, enter the following settings. Your Xbox IP might be different.

    Host: 192.168.0.2
    Username: xbox
    Password: xbox
    Port: 21

Username and password all in lower case.

Make sure the crossover cable is connected to the PC and Xbox.

Hit Quickconnect, the port number disappears upon connection, hence why it's not displayed in the picture.

    Transferring A File:

I've used a small file for testing purposes. But the principle is the same for large files.

Select the file to transfer from the left hand window, DVD2Xbox. Select the destination in the right hand window (Remote site).

Right click the file to transfer, and select upload. If successful, the file should transfer to the destination folder. You will need to reboot your Xbox before it can be used.

Thank you I'm going to try it..no no..over -simplify it! I need it, I completely lost on it all. Like I said before some time ago I'm not to computer smart, I use to have someone do this sort of stuff for me and I did the mechanical side, I can install modchips,do the pin heads anything like hands on but the pc side.....a little slow. if you know what I'm saying. So make it sound like your trying to explain it to a two year old...lol

dumb it down...I need it! I feel like I'm one trying to walk and somewhat I am......lol

I did that and made all the changes you said the ethernet port was gray i change that and did everything you said. Then did that ping and the same thing came back the same...something about this command or something but it didn't do it....

Guess what it worked when I pluged it into my pc cable and ran it throught the router....I can't believe it....but why won't it work with the cross over cable? I have to keep trying but I so happy just to know that it works. I think it has all to do with the IP addresses because the router put them right up on my tv and when I figured out the top one was the xbox and used it as the IP address on FlashFTP...BANG ! it came up so fast I was shocked. So how can I find out to do this when my lap top is wireless and using the cross over cable...thanks you guys...i'm so happy just to be this far, I made a step forward....feels goooooood!

Maybe you have a standard CAT5 and not a crossover cable. Anyway, glad you've sorted it.

if you go straight from your laptop to the xbox you need a crossover cable but if you are going into a router then you need a patch cable, sorry thought you were using a router from the start, glad its all sorted for you tho, have fun

Most computers don't need a crossover cable at this point. Just a standard patch cable will do.

It's not all figured out I found out that it's not the lap top. It's the xbox I can't get the IP address for that to work with the cross over cable. I noticed when hook to the router it gave the xbox a IP address of course but when I just hooked it up to the lap top no IP address would show up for the xbox but it does show the lap top Ip address on the xbox. There's know way to put the address in the xbox. it only let's you change the lap top address. I know that the cable works because it says line status 100/full duplex and it has a mac address...have you ever heard of anything like this. On the IP address it's 0.0.0.0 showed I put that in for my address and try to ftp with that?

That didn't work the 0.0.0.0 address what to do?

DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME........please I still need some help to figure why my xbox has 0.0.0.0 for a IP address this is why I can't connect to it without being hooked up to a router. I think?........I'm still here keep throughing info at me, it's got me this far......I got to get this figured out.....HELP!

Unless you have set up your laptop as a DHCP Server (as in, a computer that hands out IP addresses) the Xbox will not be given an IP address by your laptop (unlike your router). Either make sure you SAVE the static IP address when you configure your Xbox, or alternatively enable Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 7 (at least, that's what Microsoft prescribe doing if you don't want to use 3rd party apps).

I'd recommend the 1st option rather than the second, but if you really want to do it that way, here's a guide:
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-share-an-internet-connection-in-windows-7.html

    Hope that helps.

Calm down bro, we're trying to help you. This should be easy to set up. There are tuts for it all over the net and pretty much everything is already there on this thread.

Seems to me you are not approaching this in a structured way, sounds to me like you are all over the place pulling your hair out. That's not a good approach to troubleshooting in my book. Or maybe its just the crazy, hard to follow way you write.

Im totally confused about what i should understand with this part here. Seems like everything is mixed up together in an unintelligible bloc of scribbling. (edit : ok i read again and it makes more sense now, you are used to using a router that has a DHCP server. Forget about DHCP for this purpose, everything should be entered manually)
Anyway, it appears the problem to solve at this point is configuring your network settings on the Xbox.
Basically this is done the same way as it is done on the computer.
The settings must be entered manually ( specify a static ip address )
If your are set to "automatically obtain a IP address" ( aka DHCP ) , IT WILL NOT WORK.
    This is very important.
And unless i missed it while reading the thread, we still do not know what Dashboard is installed on the Xbox hard drive. This could be important.

Xecuter 2 is my dashboard that's what is says right under the xbox logo when power it up. I beleive that's the OS right? i flashed it with a disk called xbox-board.de ultimate boot cd v 4.0 this would be my dashboard or not? But I also have been using this other hardrive that I have that has the real old slayers and thats what I have been playing around with because it's a small hardrive and if something would happen to it, so what. The other is 250g that's the one I would like to have in the xbox after I figure this atll out. Does this make any sence to you? I really only have started missing with this FTP flashing just at the beginning of this thread. I rally don't know to much about computers. I bought this TOSHIBA P855-S5200 about a week because the wife told me to get off her desk top before I F__K it up. So here I am. Trying to learn, a baby taking his first steps. So that's why I might be or sound a little slow at this...sorry...I want to learn so bad....that's why I'm thanking you for your time and helping me anyway you can. Plus my spelling isn't to good. Please excuse that to.......

Xecuter 2 is your modchip, not the Dashboard.
What you flash the modchip with is called a Bios, its still not the Dashboard.

The dashboard is kind of like the OS, The default dashboard is the green themed interface that is standards on all Xbox.
I do not think you can FTP while using the Default Microsoft dashboard, You certainly cant without a modchip but i'm not sure for a hardmodded xbox like yours. ( I mostly deal with softmodded xbox, modded with software only)

To FTP with a PC you need to use a 'modded' dashboard or a boot CD. Personally I use Auto installer deluxe (AID) cd to install my dashboards, you can also use the CD software to connect to PC via FTP, however the settings will need to be entered manually each time you reboot as they are not saved when you use a live CD.

Once a modded Dashboard is installed on the Xbox harddrive, you can keep the network settings saved on the HDD and FTP at will.

Now you say you use a Slayer hard drive, this likely has Evo-X dashboard, should be able to FTP if you have evox.

There are a variety of different Xbox dashboards ( I.e Xbox media center (XBMC) , EvoX, UnleashX and others...)

Which one you use is a matter of personal taste, all of them will let you FTP with a PC.

I recommend AID, and install XBMC. The most recent versions are the most user friendly.

I could teach you all about DHCP, why 0.0.0.0 is an invalid address, and basically everything about IPv4. But I'll just give you what you need.

A router has the ability to magically assign IP's to devices that ask for one. Your xbox must be configured to receive "automatic" network settings. When you have the xbox hooked up to the router, the xbox says, "I can haz address, plz?" The router says, "Sure! You get to be 192.168.0.105"

Your laptop doesn't natively have this ability. So xbox just fails to 0.0.0.0
If you are going to connect to your laptop directly, you will need to manually configure your xbox's network settings. And enable your ethernet port.

No it's not DUOX2 is my mod chip(white) and the OS (operating system) is xecuter2. You have to flash it first with a OS so it can reconize the DASHBOARD when you flash that. I know this to be a fact. but besides that I'm lost....it can be FTP because I said on a thread I hooked it up to a router and it work righ off the bat. But when I try to do it with a cross over cable NOTHING....can't get the IP address for the xbox?...have any clue?

I think it's like PC it won't run anything till you install windows or whatever(windows) is the OS. That's what the I had to do first with the modchip and xecuter2 is that. Like when you turn your xbox on the logo comes up and on the bottom it says microsoft mine says xecuter2 on the bottom of the logo. whatever I know you have more knowledge than me.

Yes it is a cross over cable. I didn't use that cable when I hooked it up to the router. Plus when I plug the cross over cable into my lap top and xbox it shows the mac address if I unplug it it says " NO LINK" so I know it's not the cable. Tell me more about setup the pc/xbox static IPS properly, maybe something here might be wrong? Yep I guess then I do have a DUOX2 with xecuter bios. Tell me this when you start your xbox up and the logo XBOX comes up under that logo normally it says microsoft..right...mine says xecuter2, but I have two harddrives that I have been using one with slayers on it, but it still says xecuter2 under the logo when I turn it on. Or if I use the other one it still says xecuter2 under the logo but it has xbmc/unleashx/ ms dashboard you can choose to boot up but yes I think there xeccuter bios because on skins the first one has a blue screen with a x logo in the center and on the outside of it is where you move to pick what you want to do like system, xbmc , you know what I'm talking about. Does this help in anyway..more about static IP please..thank you

wouldn't my ethernet port be enable if the xbox says the mac address when pluged into the cross over cable and if I unplug the cable from the lap top to the xbox, the xbox says "NO LINK" wouldn't that mean it's working, plus I went into my lap top and found that and it was in grey but I changed it to enable port. Then I got the IP address off the lap top but it does no good if I can't change the xbox IP address. just trying to tell you whats going on here....starting to feel like tweek off south park!

    try this guide mate

    http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-204.html

sorry here is the copy and paste

Do you have a router or just a NETWORK CARD on your PC??
Well, either way it doesnt matter. You can still FTP files to and from your XBOX and PC as you like.. So let's get onto how its done..

This is as simple as i can possibly make it for all your new xbox users..
Just dont think too hard.. heheh.. Its very simple guys.. Take your time.
    Walk through the steps.

I will now explain the basics to networking your xbox and pc. I have left explanations for just about everything i can think of.. STATIC and DHCP ENABLED.. Either way it should help you all.

Also, im not trying to use techinical terminology so please do not have a go at me guys. :) lol.. Im just trying to make it clear and simple for our newbies. I hope you all enjoy the site i have struggled to keep online and maintain with the help of all our other HQ admins.

HOW TO NETWORK A XBOX AND A PC:
XBOX -->> PC (Directly connect from xbox to PC).
    - You need whats called a cross-over cable.. This cable is totally different to a normal router network patch lead (RJ45).

    XBOX -->> HUB/ROUTER/SWITCH -- >> PC (connecting through a active device)
    - You need to be using a normal RJ45 network patch lead.. This is NOT a CROSSOVER CABLE.

SETTING UP FTP WITH DHCP ENABLED ON ROUTER or PC:
    1. Connect your pc and xbox using either option above
    2. Now turn on your PC/ROUTER
    3. Turn on your XBOX with all cables firmly connected and make sure you have your dashboard network settings (EVOX, XBMC etc etc) to STATIC = NO *only evox dash..

** You want to see if you have DHCP setup first. If your xbox doesnt get a ip address automatically then we need to setup a static ipaddress which will work on your NETWORK with the pc. SEE SETTING UP STATIC IP ADDRESS if you dont have DHCP enabled and need to setup a STATIC IP.

    4. Check that you can see activity lights on both network cards.. The Xbox and your PC or ROUTER etc.
    5. Once you have activity check to see if you have a IP ADDRESS in your dashboard settings anywhere.. Normally skins show on the main menu.. But you may have to change your skin to see it.

    5. If you now have a ip address shown on your dashboard you can connect to it using any FTP program from your PC.. I suggest FLASHFXP, and any other freeware ftp applications..

    XBOX FTP INFO IS:
    CONNECTION NAME: MY XBOX
IP: MY IP ADDRESS (192.168.0.2) etc etc
    PORT: 21
    USER: xbox
    PASS: xbox

thats it.. You can transfer files directly from your pc to xbox.. If you are still having difficulties please read on how to setup static ip.

    SETTING UP STATIC IP ADDRESS:
    1. Connect your pc and xbox using either option from above
    2. Now turn on your PC/ROUTER
    3. With WINXP do the following:
    - Choose 'Start Menu' and then Click on 'RUN'
    - Type 'cmd' or 'command' into the space provided and press enter (return)
    - When the command prompt appears type 'ipconfig /all'
    - Write down all your pc info

here is a example of what the ip config will look like..

    C:>ipconfig /all

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : 64bit
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethe rnet NIC
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-13-D3-9C-E7-94
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 203.12.160.65
    203.12.160.66

    - If your PC has a IP ADDRESS of 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 your xbox would be: 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.3 or any other ip address in the similar range.. It could even be 192.168.0.200 if you wanted.
    - If your PC has a SUBNET MASK of 255.255.255.0 then your xbox should be exactly the same..
    - Same goes for DNS Servers.. You have to copy down the pc info and put into your xbox.

anyway, so now you should have something like this on your network.

    COMPUTER INFO:
    ip: 192.168.0.1
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    dns: 203.12.156.12

    XBOX INFO:
ip: 192.168.0.2 (.3, .4, .5 etc tc) whatever you choose just remember
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    dns: 203.12.156.12 (same as pc)

DONE AND DONE.. Connect to your XBOX using the same method as descirbed above.. I will copy and paste here to make easy:

    XBOX FTP INFO IS:
    CONNECTION NAME: MY XBOX
IP: MY IP ADDRESS (192.168.0.2) etc etc
    PORT: 21
    USER: xbox
    PASS: xbox

TESTING YOUR CONNECTION TO THE XBOX CONSOLE:
Its very simple to test if your xbox is talking with your pc on the same network.
You can do whats called a ping request.. It will send a small packet of information accross your network to the specified ip adress.. Once the packet of data is received at the other end your xbox (in this case) will reply.

How to ping your xbox from your pc:
    With WINXP do the following:
    1. Choose 'Start Menu' and then Click on 'RUN'
    2. Type 'cmd' or 'command' into the space provided and press enter (return)
    3. When the command prompt appears type 'ping IPADDRESS' where IPADDRESS = the ipaddress of the xbox.. eg. ping 192.168.0.1..
    4. The ping will return some text with a reply time if the xbox is found.

If your xbox is successfully connected you will receive a reply like this:

    C:>ping 192.168.0.2

Pinging 192.168.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

    Ping statistics for 192.168.0.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

THAT INDICATEDS TO ME MY XBOX IS ONLINE AND READY TO FTP!

    5. If you ping and receive no reply this means your xbox is not setup with a ipaddress and you will not be able to access it.. it could also mean you have a firewall enabled.. I would suggest disabling firewalls until you can get your ftp connection working and pinging.

here is a example if my machine was not functioning on the network..

    C:>ping 192.168.0.2

Pinging 192.168.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 192.168.0.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

SOMETIMES FIREWALLS HAVE ALOT TO DO WITH YOUR PC AND XBOX NOT BEING ABLE TO CONNECT.. JUST TURN OFF TEMPORARILY TO TEST!

Look, don't triple post - there's an edit button - USE IT! And there's no need to bump so often. People have other things to do, like work and sleep, other than help you. Likewise, I didn't see your post JUST before me, no - so don't get snappy if you want help.

Go and read what I said again. Do it with your router, not the crossover cable. Why would you want to do it the hard way? Still, as I said, and everyone else said, you need a DHCP server to give you an IP address (i.e. the router) - or configure it manually. Of course it doesn't assign an IP address automatically if you insist on using the antiquated crossover cable.

Do yourself a favour - go and get a STRAIGHT cable and plug both devices into your router! If not, read up on how to manually configure IP addresses and network basics... including how to ping and do a loopback test when things don't go right.
