I have 2 broken Panasonic Q's. One is entirely missing the drive spindel and laser deck. The other has a torn and damaged spindel. There is very little info about these systems and repairing them. I read that the drive is actaully made of panasonic dvd parts that are found in their players of that era. Does anyone know where i can order them or what model player had them so i can scap it for parts?

Is there no markings on the drive itsself? There may be a part number.

Alright here are pictures of both drives. One is almost beyond salvage, but with the right parts i think it could work. The other has a ripped cable on the spindel. Also someone tried soldering on it and destroyed the contacts. So one drive only needs a spindel.

    Spindle looks repairable IMO.

Spindle = just 2 broken cables in the flex ribben? Just solder 2 longish cables on the broken ports and on to the solder pads to where the flex cable should go, OK so it might no longer be removable but it should work.

that flex is repairable, i've managed to swap flexes for the PS2 Slims some time ago, in case that is not for you, you always can hard wire it or add another type of connector, but i think that's not the only problem, that's a bad re-assembling, something has failed, probably the laser and was reassembled by throwing the parts inside, check the number on the lens, panasonic drives are not so hard to find.

Hi all, sorry for opening a dead thread but I'm also in need of a new plastic drive chassis. There was talk a while back on another thread about possibly 3D scanning a fully intact drive chassis. The only downside being the cost for the scanning part. Would it be a good idea to do some sort of donation for renting a scanner? The scan can then be shared on Assembler and given to a print company to print a replacement with a higher quality plastic.

Sorry if this sounds far fetched, I'm just spinning ideas.

Typically mechanical parts are just measured with a caliper and redrawn on parametric CAD program. Unless you are dealing with free-form curvatures that are difficult to measure with conventional means, scanning is not needed. Even if a part is scanned, the scanned model is seldom used as-is in mechanical application and could end up being more work. For artistic application it's not a big deal.
