Hi guys, I'm trying to follow this guide. http://mdpal60.net/wiki/megadrive/regionmod/start So I bought this switch for the mod: I've added text where it's hard to read in the picture. And I figured this is how the wiring should go on it. The blue lines are where I break the connection of the jumpers. The other lines are wires. My question: am I correct? I'm not too sure about the black wire. On the guide, the ground wire goes from ground to the switch instead of the off position. Can someone help please?
Yup you are correct and this should work perfect. The middle pin is not the off position and the others arent really the on... What it basically says is if you move the lever to the left the green wire and the black are shorted (i.e. are connected to each other), and if you move it to the right black is shorted with red. Good luck
Actually, that's a three-position switch. When the switch is in the centre position, then neither of the contacts are connected. Hence - off.
You sir are a gentlemen i have been searching for a decent tut on this mod as i wanted to do some experimenting and i couldnt find the alternative 60Hz mod and this is the one thank you so much for putting the link up.
Well yes indeed, my reply was a bit too quick (I only got this switch in the two-way version) But basically what I said is still correct
Did the mod according to my wiring scheme, and it worked. I am now enjoying 60Hz gameplay. All I need now is an Everdrive MD! Edit: thanks for your help jp1357, I was confused as the switch said "on/off". I am not very good in electronics, only in soldering.
If you do this mod and find that the switching is unreliable, then try soldering a pair of 10K resistors across the JP2 and JP4 positions on the board to make sure that you are getting a good logic '1' level when the switch isn't pulling it low. The inputs seem to float high anyway, but the are very high impedance and quite susceptible to noise pickup without external pullups.
Currently I'm getting black/white through my RF cable when switching to the US/JAP signal. I bought one of these, and am currently awaiting delivery. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress. I did have a few problems right after soldering, but the next day I had no more problems. Maybe it was because the switch was still hot from soldering, otherwise I'll try your advice. Thanks!
And the end result: As soon as I get the RGB cable and can confirm that I get colour when switching to NTSC, I'm ordering an Everdrive right away.
Just got the s-video RGB cable, and the difference is amazing. It's almost as sharp as playing on an emulator for me. I now get colour when switching to NTSC as well (with the RF cable I just got black and white). However, NTSC colours seem to be slightly more faded than the PAL ones. It's barely noticable, but it is happening. My Panasonic plasma had two scart ports, and one had "s-video" written under it, so I plugged it in there, set the tv to 4:3, and again, holy crap. I should have gotten one of these cables years ago. I bought mine from the guys at Retrogaming Cables UK (I got the stereo one), and I can't stress enough how pleased I am with the combination of this cable plus the 60hz mod. First thing after work I'm ordering an Everdrive MD.
