Oh. Thanks. For a sec there i thought you were going to talk about emulators again. for real though. i started reading up on this hard. It sounds like the only thing i can do is major surgery with risk of breakage, or buy a new TV. I think i'll just pick up one of those 34" CRTs that pop up on C-List all the time for $40.
While that's the least risky idea, you still may wish to consider this. Get a good CRT that support S-Video. Then when you have the time or money get someone to build you a box to take the RGB from your NeoGeo's AV port and convert it to S-Video. There is not the risk of opening the console up then and you could get a much needed video quality improvement. Unless Composite is of good quality on your console and the CRT you get. I heard AES systems vary in Composite output quality.
So. I did it. I ordered the "Super MVS Convertor II" from neostore.com . JEEZ it hurts paying $250 for something as small as a converter. You know what though, It beats all the money and work i would have to put into building a consolized MVS. I also ordered the "100 in 1" cart from Hong Kong a place called welink.cc . I know a lot of people are against this kind of thing but I see it as a way to play a lot of games that I wont be able to afford for a while. It wont stop me from buying AES and MVS carts, but at least i will have stuff to play (other than the 6 games i have). Now I'm on the hunt for AES and MVS boxes. I found one place called southtown-homebrew.com who sells MVS shockboxes, but as of "Soon" I will only have 1 MVS cart. The AES boxes seem to be the hardest and most expensive to come by. I need 5 of those . I was contemplating ordering some cardboard bankers boxes that would fir the AES carts just fine but I would still feel like I could have done better.
I see your point about putting work into it, but if you could have bought a consolized system for the same it would be better functionally for the few games that aren't convertor friendly 100%. But I doubt you could find a nice consolized system for that cheap, and if you don't like the idea of a SuperGun then this may be better. Either way enjoy it! NeoGeo has a nice library. Curious why you went with the 100-in-1 and not the 150 or higher? Compatibility issues/worries?
Yeah. The 100 in 1 is the only cart that has 100% compatibility with the converter I bought. Or so i have read. Not a lot of people seem to want to talk about it on the Neo-Geo forum because it seems it is really looked down upon. I did find a guy who was able to get the 160 in 1 to work on his aes but had to open up the converter and bridge some stuff over. im not willing to do that myself. and the 100 in 1 has everything i need on it. the game roster is pretty damn good.
It's funny you mention that synching issue, my hd-tv also has that issue, but only with s-video. S-video works fine, but there is like a 2-3 second delay before the image display, which results in me missing part of the start up screen. However on composite starts instantaneous. Though with interlacing issues when using an hd tv(ie lines when blanka does his electrical shock) I often just use my old sony crt tv for the pre hd stuff. Though playstation and saturn seem to display perfectly fine with no interlacing issues I noticed.
Yeah. The picture quality on my dumb 21" CRT is remarkably good considering i am using the stock neo geo composite cable. I am realllly afraid to modify my AES. I think I will try and pick up a loose U.S. system and install the UniBios and do the s-video mod on that one. But I think im going to keep my Japanese AES stock. BTW, I call dibs on your AES games if you're ever going to sell em. (lol)
Buy a scart cable for your neo. Then you need scart to yuv converter. You'll get 480i that way...but you're better of with a rgb monitor or older flat tube t.v. 2-D cames suck on any lcd no matter what you do.
Oh! If you want SVC Chaos. Neostore.com still has U.S. versions for $199 Brand new. That's where I got Mine.
Like a charm. The only games that wont work out of the 100 or so are CTHD and CTHD+ and I am ok with that. but still kind of regretting spending over $300 for all that stuff. Well. maybe in 16 years i can sell it and help my kid through college.
The two Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon games are just hacks of KOF 2003 so you're not losing out on anything there at all, it's definitely one of the weaker of the series' entries.
I'm not sure that it's as cheap as when I started but that's why I recommend MVS over AES. It used to be you could get a MVS JAMMA PCB for anywhere from 10 to 50 bucks. Then all you need is to put together a cheap Supergun to use it which could cost you between $0 to $120 or so at the time. The main cost being a RGB->NTSC video encoder. Then you could buy MVS carts which were pretty cheap. It's all still cheaper than AES for sure but it's not as cheap as it once was which is probably just due to dumb inflation of prices that does not reflect actual demand which has probably gone down. I have a SuperGun I built but I've pretty much lost interest in it other than the NeoGeo, in part thanks to MAME. At some point I'd like to "consolize" my NeoGeo MVS.
Same thing actually. Since AES carts are so expensive and the cost of a converter costs more than a MVS + Supergun... Just start with MVS. Plus if you DO want to collect games it is alot cheaper. It's stunning how much some AES titles go for. But then again they really are very rare since extremely limited numbers were manufactured I'm sure.
