I found this very interesting thread over at the NeoGeo forums.

    The NeoStar

Surely that is the largest, coolest looking thing ever. And wireless Neo stick would have been great.

Sounds mighty impressive, even if bigger than an Xbox

Sounds like its more or less on the jaguar/3DO power level, and approx the same time - perhaps this was developed as competition for the 2...not that it was needed however

I'd heared that the NeoCD was originally supposed to sit under an AES (like a Mega CD1) as an expansion, rather than a stand-alone console. That would have been pretty damn cool. I wonder how far this project progressed?

I wonder if that's a Proto of the failed Neo64 arcade unit?

shockingly your probably right, from the sound of it it seems thats what it is. Still id bet it be waaay too expensensive if ever produced.

Indeed the Neo Star dev ended up as the Neo CD & Hyper 64 respectively.

I wonder how they would have managed that?
The AES console has no expansion ports...

Cartridge port would have to be used for interfacing, but then it would have to have a lead to the bottom of the console, which would be a bit ugly and inelegant...

Hmm, yeah. It'd be like a FamiDisk adaptor, scaled upto the size of an AES cart. Either that, or it'd be like a Jag CD unit but Neo Geo sized 8)

God only knows. But I bet there is/was some damn interesting stuff locked away in SNK R&D. If they can even consider a concept as crazy as the NeoStar there must have been some other oddities. Or maybe even a CD unit with a 2x speed drive and a decent cache.

i wonder how the hell japanes would take it, judging from the pics this would be a console possibly bigger then the first xbox.

I'm sure they'd love it. There's bigger neo anyway with the hotel unit. (why oh why didn't I get one a few weeks back)

Instead of saying "It looks bigger than XBOX", you all should be saying "It looks bigger than the 5200." The 5200 makes the XBOX look small, and that thing makes the 5200 looks small.

...Just when i thought we were out of good obscure topics.

That thing look damn bulky, in a very apealing way. That would have been the cadilac of gaming for sure.

I wonder what they are meaning by "increase the resolution of the normal displays it is connected to" though. Anyone can explain me how in the hell they could do this?

If they'd knocked the price on the head the Hyper64 could have been quite a capable machine. I'd say it was between PSX and Dreamcast in terms of overall graphics quality, just a shame they only bothered to release 7 games ;)

  17. Mmmmm... unreleased SNK hardware. I wonder how much of this thing's proposed hardware made it into the Hyper64 system? Does anyone know the Hyper64 system specs off the top of their heads?
